    Warming up before riding off

I was told when taking delivery of my new Alp that if the bike is cold, I should let it idle before riding until the temperature shows on the display, which occurs when it reaches 35º. I've heard this story several times over the years, having owned many bikes, about letting them warm up first but I'm not convinced it really makes any difference to anything.

    What's the general view here?

normally let mine warm up a little just to circulate oil a bit. my manual says wait until at least one temp `block` shows on display before riding. there is also some mention of the cat being damaged if bike is left ticking over for too long. all very interesting !!

The same thing was going through my mind earlier in the week. I think any motor benefits from warming and circulation / lubrication, just think of it as foreplay and the advantages rush to the front of your mind.

I try to do it but it isn't always possible and in reality it rarely happens (the bike not the foreplay)

Re: Warming up before riding off

On my 650, I normally let her sit at 2K with the choke for about 30 seconds to a minute whilst I do up jacket/get helmet and gloves on, then once I get going use the choke to knock the idle down to just over 1500. Once she's full warmed she idles 1400 to 1500. I don't always get the chance to do this though, but I always feel a little bad if I have to leave quickly. My mum, on the other hand, has this thing about letting a car idle from cold, and will go mad if she can't drive off straight away after starting it up

I start my 650 without choke and hold the revs on the throttle.
I do wait until it is steady before thrashing it but rarely wait for the temp to show.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

Re: Warming up before riding off

there is no choke on TA700.
    Start and ride off.
    I will make one concession
I usually get stopped at many lights so after about a mile
I usually make sure tickover revs are low(ish)

Re: Warming up before riding off

Thanks for the replies. The manual for the 700 says:

"After the engine has been warmed up, the motorcycle is ready for riding."

They don't specify what is meant by "warmed up" but presumably it isn't the full normal operating temperature. So it seems the advice I was given to wait for the first display temperature of 35º to appear does have official backing.

I start the bike (TA700) put on helmet and gloves and move off. Temp is at 35 as I cross the pavement and awayyyyyyyyy we go! DD

Re: Warming up before riding off

I've always let my bikes warm up on first starting before riding them.
Normally, once an even tickover is achieved, the time it takes to don jacket, helmet & gloves is enough time at idle (without choke, if required) before riding.

    Just my ramblings.
