    TA XL700AV oil leaks

Hi all, my TA is dripping oil on garage floor . One drip comes from the larger diameter of the three vent pipes and also from near the oil filter (but not from the filter or its seal face). To think I traded my Bonnie (that never droped any oil in three years) in for the TA and also my 1976 CB400 four is drip free after thirty-three years . So as its still under waranty do you recon it warants a claim under guarantee? Dave.

hold it right there....put those spanners down for a min...........are you sure its engine oil leak? only asking as i had similar `leak` on me old alp too. turned out not to be a leak.......its the oily / gunk that collects inside the front sprocket cover and as it gets warm ( always had it after a good blat )drizzles onto outside of breather pipes / oil filter etc and onto floor........result = visible `oil leak `!!!!. take off sprocket cover and take a peek. chances are its full of nice sticky oily greasy goo just itching to melts its way down to the floor. cleaned all mine right up and instantly cured. check right along sidestand leg too ( windblast ) good luck ade

p.s have you got a scottoiler fitted?......only asking as if the flow rate isnt set at proper `drip` rate, this can aggravate the problem i found.

Definately engine oil from large dia hose (stuck a pipecleaner up and all black wet oily also this pipe is shortest and other two have oil on outside of pipes). Scottoiler set ok. Fuel tank qtr full. Will remove cover clean front sprocket tomoz evening. Still the oil leak from filter area . Newspaper under to access ammount. Could always divert engine breather horizontal under seat so exccess runs back to engine, its only a breather when all said and done. I would like to fix it without bothering Mr Honda. Dave

I oil the chain on my 700 as per the manual (gear oil) and I get drips of oil from that area. When I changed the oil and filter I gave it all a good clean around the front sprocket and the 3 breather pipes. It was covered in black oily gunk. Nothing was leaking, just a build up of oil off the chain. Hopefully this what your problem is.

Should'nt be blowing oil out of the breather like that have you checked the oil level?

Regardless of what it is if it is under warranty get the dealer to check it.
May as well use the thing, as it is there.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

Totally agree with this -- and hope you get some use out of it, but from what I read about some dealers these days its as well to be wised up as to whats actually happening with the bike by looking yourself.

    Excess oil from breather pipe

    Possibly

Oil pick up from being over-filled - easy solution!
Oil scraper/sealer ring broken - if it has one - not so easy!
Piston ring broken/worn - also not easy, but compression test should be a good indicator.
Valve stem seals gone - unlikely but possible

Guess the last 3 may constitute a warranty claim on a 700

    Re: TA XL700AV oil leaks

Oggy ,are your sure that it is in fact oil thats leaking!.
Because i had the same problem but with me it was not oil but black/grey sticky grease dripping from the front sprocket.
Also simular ,the stuff was all over the area ,the 3 pipes clogged together ,oilfilter and centrestand had their share aswell.
Removed the plastic sprocket cap and oh man what a mess in there. Toke a while to clean it out (good opportunity to check the sprocket).
Since then the dripping stopted ,unless just after the first ride when the chain was sprayed ,then sometimes a little drop of grease again.

Check the post "Grease" from a couple off weeks ago.
