Check your Chain tension, that can cause clonking.
The Engine needs to be cold to do the valves, the hardest part is stripping the bike down to get to them. Two pair of hands would make it easier.
I am on Holiday for the Second Week in November if you would like to DIY.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

    Hi Stumpy
Have done the chain, it's not that.
Thanks for the offer but I'm not about for that week...

one clean (fuel filter - which I haven't even got on my bike) ,
Agreed, £400 is taking the piss ( I'd do it for 100 bar + bits!)

Austin you will, or certainly should have a fuel filter on the ALP, you need to remove the tank & tip it on its side (or drain the tank) & remove the fuel 'tap' to get to it.

oops, just shows what I know about servicing bikes Anyway after 70,000 miles and its never been looked at and it seems fine to me, checking it every 8k seems overkill. I might have a look at the next "service" though.

    Old dog new tricks

I think that most service items (plugs, valves etc) on the Alp could be stretched to 15k or so easily enough.

......or even 70K in my case - as far I am aware the valves on my bike have never been touched. I gave up checking yonks ago. Last set of plugs got changed after 24K and could have go on longer too. I am religous with Oil and filter changes though, and the K&N air filter has been cleaned once since I fitted it at 12K. Which pretty much leaves the daily checks - which as stumpyfingers says are not much different from the 4K service, and changing the brake fluid and Fork oil when they need it (both have been done once, but forks could probably do with another change soon).

I got a cost for the 700 alp from Honda Blackpool last week. £190 including the valve adjustments.

Be prepared to haggle if need be, but these chaps seem pretty genuine and works good.

    Re: 8000 Service

I would agree with other posters that valve checking, plug life and air filter life could all be extended. I cannot see much justification why Honda specifies such frequencies - unless, as advised in the manual, you line Mr Honda's pocket further by taking it to one of their dealers - cynical moi?

Totally agree with oil and filter change though - the single most importnat maintenance factor by a long way. I change mine every 4000. Easy and cheap job compared to the possible consequences of not doing it. Brake fluid I bleed through every 2 years, and can't say I've ever changed fork oil.

Naturally tyres, chain etc should all be checked regularly.

Addditionally, maintenance of the organic blobby thing riding the machine should always be taken into consideration.

    Re: 8000 Service

I check my bike on a regular basis, I have just got the new grips and HID LED's wired into the bike.
As for Tappets, I do check mine every 2 years.
That is because I change the coolant every 2 years and as the cooling system is empty I can remove the radiator and get decent access.

    Re: 8000 Service

    Update...

As is always the case 1-2 weeks before i intended to book my bike in for a service it started running poorly on start up until it had warmed up, running fine on choke but as soon as the throttle opened loss of power

Anyhows booked in with the local dealer and took it in for its 8k service £200'ish + bits n pieces and also asked them to look at the poor running.

For some reason water had entered into the fuel system and when you open the throttle water was blocking the carb jets.

Have no idea other than water in the petrol at source as to how it got in. The petrol cap drain is unblocked and they said that they blew it thru with an airhose so not an issue.

The mechanic showed me how to drain the carb in future etc.

    Good service From Hunts.

On side note steering bearing how long are they supposed to last, I havnt been off road just road use so far.
