    8000 Service

    Hi All,

Coming up to my 8000 mile service and i understand its a big necessary service.

Local dealer (Hunts/Manchester) quoting roughly £400.00.

Anyone know of a shop/dealer in the north west thats reasonable, as its alot of money at this time of year.

If I take it to another dealer/shop will this effect any remaining warranty i have on the bike and how necessary is this service, i believe it involves checking the valve clearances.

    Any suggestions?

    Cheers

    Re: 8000 Service

Can't recommend a dealer since i'am living far far away from you.
But the yep the 8000miles/12.000km is a big one ,and "normaly" includes at least valve inspection and if needed adjusting.
Thats why its a expensive service ,takes a while to get to the valves.
Count on a 250€ for the whole thing ,that is whitout replacing extra parts like brakepads ,tyers etc.

    Enjoy

    Re: 8000 Service

The 8K service is NOT a big one and definitely NOT worth £400 - they really are taking the piss. Have a look in your book, the 8K service involves 3 replaces (plugs, oil and filter), one clean (fuel filter - which I haven't even got on my bike) , and everyting else is an inspect - bearing in mind inspect includes inspections like coolant level, which must take oooh all of 5 seconds, and idle speed, also a matter of seconds to look at the tachometer. To be fair it does also include inspecting valve clearance and a carb balance, both of which would take an experienced mechanic minutes rather than seconds.

The BIG service, if ever their is such a thing comes every 24000 which is the only time all the service items come together inclduing replacing air filter, coolant, brake fluid.

You don't have to use a honda agent to keep your warranty, you can even DIY as long as you have some evidence, eg a reciept for the consumables and sign the book yourself.

If you must use a honda dealer blackpool honda keep making me offers for servicing, last time was £200 incl parts and labour for a 16K service on the Vara, which was tempting but in the end I did myself.

As Austin has said they are taking the piss! I look after my own bike and at 8,000 the carbs were still balanced and I could have left the valve clearances as they were but altered just one of them.
All the time goes on pulling the bike apart to get at the job which to be honest the first time I did this I thought it was a real ball ache! especially after running old airhead BMWs which took all of ten minutes to set the valve clearances. BUT once you know how the transalp comes apart its alot easier, if you are machanically minded and have the time do it yourself.

    Re: 8000 Service

Austin ,there are only two sort of services to me.
A small one every 4000mile/6000km and a big one every 8000mile/12.000km.

Only the first services are "cheap" so to say. Besides the usual replacements (oil ,plugs oilfilter) there is no need for extra parts.

After that there is always a extra part(s) coming up for renewal (tyre ,breakpads and so on).

For instance ,the 12.000mile/18.000km is normaly a small one but with replacing the airfilter becomes more expensive than a regular small one.

I do agree that 400£ is way to much.

    Enjoy

    Re: 8000 Service

As a matter of course I check my bike over on a regular basis.
When I checked the service schedule I found I was doing the 4000 mile service every time. the 8000 only adds on an oil and filter change and air filter clean.
The air filter is supposed to last for 12000 miles. While I was fitting the new grips and controller I did the 8000 mile service as near as.

    Re: 8000 Service

It is a long service Hangfire, I dropped mine off at 9am and it wasnt ready until about 3.30pm. It cost me £350 but by all accounts on here that was a rip off.
