Hepco & Becker Pannier Frames - help!

    Hello,

I have recently purchased my first big trailie, in the form of a 2003 TA and am loving the bike so far (my previous bike was a Honda Hornet 600)!.

I have just bought a set of panniers off ebay that looked to be a bargain, but now I'm not so sure. They are a set of Hepco & Becker Journey 42litres (yes, you read that right, 42litres!), and they are seriously good, but bloody huge!! Almost like Samsonite cases! However, I need some pannier frames for them, and after searching through a couple of threads on this forum, I get the impression that the H&B pannier frames actually protrude out further on the exhaust side than the other side, and you should get a smaller pannier for the exhaust side, otherwise it will look odd.

Did I make the right choice in buying these panniers? They were £180.
Are H&B frames my best choice (even though they stick out apparently?), or am I best getting frames from someone like SW Motech and get an adaptor kit?

Any help or advice would be appreciated, and love the forum!.

    Thanks,

    Darren

I got H&B's on my Varadero they are brilliant and the frames are really strong they go under my rack plate , both sides obviouslt and then brace both the side frames by going around the back of the bike around the number plate. Can't fault them..

    Hi,

I have a Transalp that is fitted with hepco & becker frames and I have found that they are very good and strong indeed, But yes they do look odd as they are wider over the exhaust side and my panniers which are smaller than yours do stick out a little further on one side.
The panniers That I have are what the German & Dutch police use and dont look too bad but with much larger panniers may prove to be a problem.
With bikes like the Varadero which have a silencer on each side it all balances out to fit any panniers you need the rails and there is no getting around the fact that the Transalp is going to be problomatic with twin large panniers,
I would get a set of rails and just offer the panniers you have up to the bike if they wom't do you could always re-sell them and aquire some smaller ones.
I hope this info helps, others might be able to offer better advice than me
    best of luck.

    BIG D.

42 litres? You'll need a wide load sticker!

    Guys,

Thanks for the responses. Yes, I will probably end up having to fit flashing amber lights on either pannier to warn people of a wide load!. And I daren't even think about filtering!.

I guess the best thing I can do is get some frames and offer the panniers up......and then sell them after finding that I can't get the bike out of the garage....

Do you know if all pannier frames for the TA, from the different manufacturers, are manufactured the same way, i.e. they protrude out on the exhaust side more than the other?

    Thanks,

    Darren

I've got SW Motech EVO frames on my TA with same size Trax panniers each side, the exhaust side sticks out about 10mm more than the other, such a small difference you don't notice it.

I have the SWMOTECH pannier racks and 41 litre panniers, on my Transalp.
I dare not attempt filtering with them on.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE
