    Need help....

The other night whilst out on my TA had a bit of a laxative moment whilst doing near 75 mph on the motorway....

The bike seemed to doing fine and then all of sudden the rev counter dropped and the engine cut out... causing my back wheel to lock up...

I managed to keep control of the back end as it slid all over the place fishtailing down the road, and I grabbed at the clutch to release the back wheel. I managed to get full control and steer onto the hard shoulder and stop the bike.

Here's the puzzle bit, after a couple of mins started the bike again, which just fired up right away, and then didn't seem to have any further problem as I continued my journey.

A mate of mine made a possible suggestion that as it was raining at the time ( and had been for a while, so lots of surface water..), that water must have got into the electrics somewhere, and caused the engine to cut out. But thing is... I ride my bike in all weathers, and have riden in the rain loads of times without any problems.....

Just wondered if anyone else has ever encountered this before, or can make any suggestions as to what might have caused it to happen...

My bike is a '88 XL600V-H, and has irridium plugs fitted, allong with an aftermarket exhaust (doesn't add/remove any power, just sounds alot louder...)...

I would suspect the Reg /Rectifier. If it overheated it would cause the engine to stall. Go for the simple things first though, Check all connections and plugs for anything loose.

    cdi?

though unlikely to make the engine cut out completely losing a cylinder at that speed would probably have a similar effect no?

I've had engines cut out at speed (many times, fuel pump breaking, knocking a kill switch on in handlebar muffs etc) and all that happens is you slow down and roll to a stop even with the clutch out, you can even attempt to restart as you go through the gears. If the back wheel locks that usually means a seizure or similar.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

Got to agree with this I too have had similar experiances, no way should the back wheel have locked up just by way of the engine stopping, I would ride very carefully untill you find out why.

Have you checked the coolant level and the OIL Level?

EEERRRRRMMMMMM,,,,, time to make myself look very stupid....

Was going on the M'cr Toy Run ride out today, so before going out thought that I'd give the TA a look over first (bare in mind I said that the bike started again and seemed to run fine after the lock up...).

Checked the connections on the electrics, all fine and gave a good coating with WD40. Checked the plugs and leads, all fine and gave them a coat of WD40. Checked the water, fine. But then came the oil....... pulled out the dipstick, and...... no oil on it.... so started to top up the oil.... a bit...!!! After putting in just over 1 1/2 litres, the dipstick showed the oil level as full.

Took it for a spin, and all now seemed great.... runs abit smoother, and funnily enough.... quieter too....

On the way back from the Trafford Centre, decided to follow my mates back along the motorway...... and not a problem...

So think I need to keep a closer eye on the oil levels..... especially since think the last time I checked it was about a week after I did the last oil change..... Back in March '09......

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?
