    HELP!!! fork oil level?

no this has been covered loads times but having a "blonde moment"
fork oil level should be 542cc oil then 141mm .

does that mean approx 542ml and with fork compressed and no spring, were do you take measurement from? top of fork down inside fork tube ?

help bike in bitds and off to work tomorrow

I'm quoting the XL700VA shop manual:

Slowly pump the fork tube several times to remove any trapped air from the lower portion of the fork tube.
    Compress the fork tube fully.
Measure the fluid level from the top of the fork tube.
Then manual says to install the fork spring so measurements are without the spring.

    Hope I helped...

Stantion compressed then measure from the top of the stantion down onto the oil, I used a short length of an old tape blade I could just see down the stantion enough to see as it touched the oil maybe you could use a head torch to do it. -----Chris

    cheers,
yeh new the bit about pumping and draining old dirty v/thin oil and removed spring , but wasn`t sure how you measured will go and tip in more oil and get me measuring cane out.

can always tip some out or get me shringe thingy out.

Did notice when removing top cap after releasing the top yoke clamps they were`nt very tight maybe they were leaking air on compressun, who knows at least it will be done right when i`ve finished.

well all what can i say , absolutly brilliant well planted and no were near as much dive [ 10mm preload by washers]. just glides over the bumps on the road. Up back preload by 3-4mm and increased compresion rebound a bit , bikes rock steady at 90mph should have done this ages ago.

used halfords bought castrol fully synthetic 10w, old oil was knackered.

Bet the difference there Russ is the 10w oil, first thing I did when trying to stop that horrible initial first few inches of fork dive was to remove the standard 5w oil and put in a 10w that alone made a hell of a difference.
