So what is the knack? Rather not have to "engine out" every service!!
Why do them I am sure they were checked on its service at 28k
True, phil, but then it's goood to know how before you need to: just planning ahead, is all!! They don't sound out of adjustment...
They're not too bad once you've done 'em a few times, as others have said it's the front exhaust that's a bit of a fiddle - just undo the RH rad bolts and move it out of the way.
Helps if you're double jointed or have the fingers of a concert pianist.![]()
Didi a minor service (oil filter checked this and that, fitted scotoiler etc).
I took the opportunity to get familiar with where stuff is!
On closer inspection, would I be right in saying that the exhaust tappets are under the circular caps with 22-24mm bolt head, and the inlets under the oval covers with the two 8mm bolts securing them?
The manual I downloaded in PDF is for late 80s models and these appear to be different in that respect, so I cannot use it as a guide as I'd like...
Did mine yesterday - but this is on a 650..
I don't remember any major differences in doing the work and the 600 does not have all the emissions pipework on top of the cam covers - which helps.
Once I got this far I remembered why I hadn't done the job for so long....

This is the front cylinder intake valves cover removed;

As already pointed out - undo the 3 bolts holding the radiator and swing it backward - unbolting the emissions thingy from the back of the rad' helps on the 650. To get the exhaust valve cover off you need an 8mm spanner - there is no clearance for a socket;

Take the single feeler guage you will be using out of the set - this gives you a bit more 'free space' to work in. I use a ring spanner and needle nose pliers to adjust the settings. Front intake valves;

I was lucky. After 31,000 miles since I last checked them, they were all still spot on.
Whether you do this job or not - get some grease on the timing cover threads or they seize solid;

Silly question, but will oil come out of the timing cover when I undo it?
