I suppose you could look at it another way...

A HID light source is around 3 times stronger than a halogen light source. If you are putting it in a light housing designed for a halogen bulb, the peripheral light that hits an oncoming motorist will be at least 3 times greater (ignoring the cutoff and scatter issues).

Do you think an oncoming motorist may find your light to be too bright if you had a 180/165 watt bulb fitted? The effect will be much the same.

Ive just bought a Fazer600 on a 98 plate, lovely bike apart from the lights. There are mods you can do to improve the brightness, but its the beam itself, 20 yards if that..think im going down the spotlights route.... dont matter how bright your bulbs are if youve got a rubbish reflector design..

Do you not think that civilised countries with a road system primarily consisting of paved roads will encounter exactly the same problems as each other? Light does not behave differently and scatter more in America, sorry. Yes, the rise will be on a different side depending on which side of the road you're tavelling on, but that's really inconsequential. Yes the laws will be slightly different, but even if HID retrofit kits were legal I would still strongly discourage people from using them. Legality is not the primary issue here (though it is an issue), the issue is preventing everyone from blinding everyone else with their hundred thousand million watt super efficient quasmo laser headlight systems.
What I actually said was it would carry more weight if it was not a N. American article, I didn't take issue with any of the content.

I have an HID conversion on my 650. It has passed three MOT's at three different test centres and has passed a VOSA roadside check.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

    Re: HID Motorbike Conversion Kit

Read through what has been argued here, and in other posts, and have looked through that link posted about the difference between the conventional bulb and the arc of the HID.

So from reading that some people get flashed for brightness and others don't my question is has anyone fitted a HID to an older 600 transalp? 94 style in my case, noticed anything from other drivers that could show aggrivation?
A thought I had was the way these older lights worked, with a parabolic reflector, as it can only have one focal point and the glass lense gives it the beam pattern would this "work better" though not perhaps 100% correct

I'm currently using Philips Xenon H4's. On the transalp it made an improvement but nothing like what it did for my small winter bike.
I'm putting that down to the fact that the winter bike has a brand new headlight unit whereas the transalps is 15 years old.

Perhaps a new headlight is the way to go, but I don't think that will be as simple or cheap a picking up a 7" unit for a classic mini and dropping it in. If the fairing were to ever get damaged maybe a twin 7" conversion would solve all my problems

    Re: HID Motorbike Conversion Kit

    Just thought I'd mention

I saw these guys at the excel show in london a month or so ago
    www.hidcity.co.uk

    Their sign when somthing like:
    Hidcity.co.uk
UK's only supplier of ECE approved HID conversion kits

The website also comes up with "E-approved" on the main page

As for my bike, I think my biggest problem was the difference in the beam pattern which isnt't so bad now I've gotten used to it.
Next step is to wire in the fog and high beam spots I've got with appropriate relays.
My plan is to give the main headlight bulb a fresh run of cable too, That way I can be sure I'm not loosing any voltage/light to the bikes 15 year old wiring
Plus it looks like its had a more powerful bulb at some point so a fresh non melted plug could help

As for HID I may get a set of h3's for the high beam spots,
That way when I switch to low for oncoming traffic any glare will be gone.
