Its lucky no-one can see inside a helmet

Thank goodness i have recovery through my insurance!

Make sure you check the tension is correct before going anywhere.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

has the bike been stored for a while?

MOT means itwas ok that day ...

I have chain go on the wee alp , about 3 mths after I first got it.. had done over 3000 mile as I did the stella with it.. changed the clutch plate.. (synthetic oil bug ) and changed the wheel bearings... chain looked fine and dandy as it had a scot oiler so left it .. no visible wear and tension fine

popped into town, 200 yards from home zero drive.. thought something had sheared in the motor ...looked down no chain ... went back could not find it .. must have landed in a ditch...

only thing I can think of is possibly it being stored for a while before I got it, perhaps a link was damp and corroded..

it let loose at low speed and within a short distance of home and did no mischeif to the bike, me or any passerby.. like you some one up there was good to me that day

Now try to change the Chain on a new to me bike as soon a I can

Twin has a nice new chain and the wheel bearing are all new too .. another story.....

    Re: Bust Chain

Personally, would always check the chain fairly regularly myself rather than take the word of someone else. My reasoning being the close shave with the far side on a very busy M1 about 20 years ago when my chain snapped doing about 80 in the fast lane and snagged between tyre and swing arm. How I missed the HGV I will never know....

For me, chains are simply a bugger to get right, but patience is rewarded. Co-incidentally, I adjusted mine two weeks ago as it appeared a tad slack. Rear was on the ground and slack was taken up to correct 40 odd mm play. Wheeled the thing out and it tightened up remarkably. Back to fiddling with the lock nuts for half an hour and eventually managed some semblance of even tension and wheel alignment. It now changes gear a little more smoothly and the slight lurch on pick-up exiting bends has disappeared.

Lube regularly - not forgetting the side links - invest in a Scott oiler, check the tension/sprockets regularly, change gear smoothly, and you will not go far wrong.

    Re: Bust Chain

the wee alp is fine with new chainset and scotoiler

but been using the XLV mainly over the past couple of years ( shaft drive )

just got the Africa twin so really making sure that chain is set up, as a poor set up can cost you an output shaft....

Its now got a new chain .. Honda Front sprocket and a Scotoiler with HCR.. sorted....

    Re: Bust Chain

Just today I took my Vara in for a sevice and MOT at a large Honda dealer in this area (see, no names).
The bike was running nice and chain noise free when I took it in but when I rode it off thier lot I noticed grinding from the drive chain.
Got home and checked it ,it was as tight as a tight-rope(craftsman?)
So dont trust them to do a good job every time ,they dont ride or have specialist knowledge of every bike they just fix em as best as they can and take ya money .

Exactly why a dealer has never touched a bike of mine Iv'e only ever had two brand new bikes but niether of them went back to the shop once they left not even for the first service.
Its a gamble with warranty I know but I had no problems, and service history means bugger all to me! If you can possibly afford the time learn how to do it yourself and then know its done right.
