    Exhaust and cat

    Chaps

Seriously thinking of investing in a shiny blue titanium tail pipe from Fuel for the 700, and also thinking of removing that useless con trick of a catalytic exhaust as well.

I do not believe there is much of an issue with fitting the exhaust, but by-passing the cat may prove bothersome. Clearly some sort of link pipe to the manifold is in order, and I do recall somebody somewhere on the forum explaining how it was done and who makes/sells the link pipe. Also, is it still legal ie at MOT time, and what is the effect on noise levels. - all advice here very welcome.

Lord alone knows why a cat if fitted anyways. Personally I think they are just a sop to the green brigade. Cats do not work at all unless operating at very high temperatures and a (relatively) small efficient bike engine is hardly likely to be a real polluter in any event. I 'm just lugging extra weight about for no real reason...

I kno it is more or less a link box on the early models but on the 700 it may or may not have a sensor which is linked to the FI system.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

Yea its just a simple link pipe afaik.

My dealer had one on his personal 700 and found a fair difference in weight and a bit in performance.

Not so sure about all the mot stuff.

    Re: Exhaust and cat

It may well be a simple link pipe but the cost is not that simple. £197 from MotoGB if anyone else is interested. Mind, it is all stainless and doubtless tooling etc is expensive so maybe there is some justification for the price.

Not sure now about justifying fitting it. I believe OK for MoT - bike is not subject to emissions - but is the outlay worth the gain. Some say better mid range is achieved and an improved response. Not too bad now to be honest, so why bother.... Hmmmm.....

£197 is why I haven't bothered. Noise is also why I didn't, can't use loud pipes in cycle races.

I do like the quality of it though as you say, you can immediately see the quality difference at the front joint and if I was going to put a metal bash plate on, which leaves this area more exposed to the elements, I'd put the link pipe on for this reason.

Worth £200 if your fitting bash plate and looking to improve clearance. Otherwise an expensive option.

    Re: Exhaust and cat

If cost is an issue, why not chop the existing cat off. Quite a few of us have done it on the 650's.
Here's mine (with the swingarm out....)

Everything should run fine as long as the lambda sensor is left in place, no probs for the MOT either

    Re: Exhaust and cat

Chopping cat/box - interesting idea. Looks to be a bit of welding of plates involved, and I guess if you are handy with a MIG set should be easy enough...My only concern would be that if you bugger it up or bike doesn't run right then you have burnt your bridges..

Must admit now my general view on replacing the cat - if indeed the large box like thing under swing arm is indeed a cat and not an expansion chamber, as I reckon the bulge forward of the Oxygen sensor is the cat - is that replacing with a straight through pipe is just not not worth the money.

Still like the idea of the Fuel exhaust tailpipe though.....
