    debaffling standard 700 can?

I am going to have a go at slicing open the can and removing all the nasty baffling, I have a leo vince de-cat, and all the reviews of rear cans either look ugly or they are too quiet.
I reckon angle grind open the silencer, cut everything out and weld it back up again, should produce about the loudest you can, and still look stock. Worst case is it is far too loud and I need to buy the leo vince back box that I am toying with anyway, best case, it sounds really cool Has anyone done this before??

Interesting idea, though not entirely sure of the wisdom. If you have the de-cat/link pipe, I would suggest you fit that first with the unmodified stock tailpipe/can. In so doing, you are also removing the stainless "box" near where centre stand should be. Personally, I think this box is some form of silencer/expansion chamber affair rather than a cat - which I think is the bulge in the pipe just forward of the oxygen sensor. Suitable amplification may then be achieved without the need to disembowel the end can - with additional benefit of perhaps a freer breathing engine.

I have to take minor issue with after-market cans. Most are a vast improvement on the aberration fitted as stock and are much lighter. Many can also be quickly de-baffled if desired for increasing sound level. Have a look at Fuel exhausts for ideas...

I would suggest aftermarket cans for reduced weight, possible increase in BHP and better exhaust note however you have to balance that against the cost as they're never cheap. Removing the insides will reduce weight and certainly increase the noise. I don't know if the reduced back pressure will affect how the engine runs so you may need to run it on a dyno. On the other hand you should just go for it and let us know how wonderful it sounds.

I don't care about efficiency or dyno's just really want it to sound properly manly.
A crazy friend of mine did a similar mod to his hornet 900 and sounded good

How do you know your getting old??

When you cant stand loud exhausts!!

Interesting idea..agree with others that Id buy the link pipe rather than mess about with the OEM piece...future sales value etc etc.

Id only relpace this if I was doing serious off road stuff on a regular basis as it is in a stupid place. Only by centre stand has saved mine from many beatings and expensive replacement.

I swapped my oem can for a Arrow one under warranty on the 3rd claim as ive got a great dealer (CJ Ball Honda Norwich if anyone needs one).

After a few months now, its a bit loud at times...not yet taken the removable baffles out either.....does breathe better though as in throttle control etc. The bike vibrates more though and weve put this down to the pipe.

TLD 2010 - 600 miles, 18 hours travelling, 4 hours sleep and no pint of guinness!! Must go back for that....

its not necessary to go to all that trouble, a 1/2" bar with a sharpened end hammered throught the internal baffles usually does the trick. endcans are designed to redirect noise in on itself, knocking or drilling some holes through the baffles or opposed tubing lets the noise out

    Re: debaffling standard 700 can?

    My question would be why?
Would it not be easier to buy an after market exhaust and keep the original standard for when you change your mind and sell the bike on?
