    Seat off.

Undo bolt at rear of tank with the toolkit under the seat.

Gently prise two side panels at the front of tank away from tank untill you feel a pop as the lugs are released from the two holding rubbers on the tank each side.

Prop up the tank with something about 4-5 inches and have a look under the tank for the rubber hoses.

You will need a pair of pliers to release the holding spring washer that holds the vaccuum hose the the side of the petcock.

Then you will need to gently twist/prise the fuel line from the petcock as well as the drain hose at the rear of the tank.

There is an electrical connector just to the rear of the tank and you will need to seperate it at this connection point and thread the wires through the frame so it is free under the tank.

Then lift it up a touch and slide rearwards and it will come away in your hands. Be careful as to how much juice in the tank as to how nmuch it will weigh and don't be surprised to get a little spillage of juice from the petcock,it will not be a lot especially if you make sure the disconnected hose to the carbs is held up and not letting the fuel in the hose spill all over the bike.

That's it, refitting is the exact reverse, just make sure the hole at the rear is lined up with the bolt hole before you try to push the side fairings in to their homes as they need to line up with the rubbers well or they get broken.

    Re: 650 tank off

The plugs are a bit trickier.
The rear plug and the other two working forward are fine it's the one at the front which is a barsteward.
I can get to it with my hand and a ratchet with the toolkit plug spanner but a lot of people find it easier to remove the side fairings and then the radiator and half the front of the bike.
I suggest you do the one's you can reach and with the tank off and the airfilter/airbox etc exposed see if you can reach the front one while your in there. It can be gotten to by removing the airbox but they can be a right git to get back on and the pair system gets in the way and is a pain if you don't know which hose goes where etc etc
Mind you,if the rear two and front rear are all ok the front front one will be fine.

Shame really I was in plymouth on tuesday, I could have popped round,c'est la vie.

The top plug at the front can be got at with the tank removed as can the one at the rear.
The PAIR system can be a PITA but as long as you do not disturb the airbox everything should be fine.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE
