    Replacing chain on XL700

Hi everyone, my chain (19000 miles) needs replacing. Is it good practice to change sprockets at the same time and if so are there any special tools i will need? I have googled replacement sets and have found an AFAM set x ring for £104 is that a good replacement or should i stick with honda oem stuff? Anyone know what a Honda replacement set costs? Thanks in advance. Rob

Have a look on silvers, his standard kits are a biut cheaper than that I think.
I use a DID gold x-ring and it was a bit pricier than what you've found but DID are probably the best. Have a scout round ebay, there are kits a bit cheaper,I would just recommend using a honda front one for the sake of the output shaft.

You'll need a chain riveter/sealer these bigger chains don't come with a split link, get a genuine kit from david silver try the 3-4 week wait it might be a bit cheaper than over th ecounter price but you have to ask for that price

Buy an OEM front and the other parts separately, Pick and mix.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

Hi! Midlife, don't be put off by the split link phobia. I've used joining links on all chains from a 50cc to 1300cc with no probs or worries. It will save a lot of aggro and as long as you fit the spring clip with the closed end on the direction of rotation you'll be fine. DO NOT USE THE SPRING CLIP TWICE. Once assembled the split link will be as strong as a riveted one, the strength is in the sideplate. Riveted chains can, and do, come apart.

    Re: Replacing chain on XL700

I'm replacing my chain and sprocket on my XL700VA9 pretty soon and I'm doing it myself for the first time ever.

I've watched quite a few videos on YouTube to get tips on how to split and rivet a chain and I'm pretty sure I'm up to doing it.

However, being a bit of a torque freak, I wondered if anyone can let me know what the torque settings should be on the following:

    Front Sprocket to Drive shaft:

    Rear Sprocket to Rear Wheel:

Can't wait to have a tinker and I'm having new tyres fitted in the morning before I have my time to play too.

    Hi Guys,
When I went to replace my chain and sprockets (20,000 miles) the dealer commented that my rear sprocket was unmarked and that the front was totally hooked. As I had covered 20K on an OEM i saw no point in messing about looking at other stuff. He let me use his workshop for a bit of DIY and so changed everything for £100. I feel my genteel riding style ... but more so my well looked after scottoiler did "the business".
