    Clutch slippage

I've had to adjust my clutch fairly regularly for the last half a year and I'm beginning to run out of adjustment- yesterday I went to dive in front of a car and revs skyrocketed and I went exactly nowhere. . So, I think it's new clutch time. (It's alright when I'm gentle with it, but I guess it's only going to get worse). Bike only has 37k, so I'm a little confused, but I first thought I might have a problem this time last year so apparently it's finally time to sort it!

    Now, what do I need?

    Engine Oil
Oil Filter (might as well whilst I'm there)
    Clutch plates- friction and metal
    springs
    Nut

Gasket for clutch? Or is it liquid sealant? If so, what? DS quoted me £30 for their honda stuff (!)
    Exhaust gaskets?

Anything I've missed? I've heard some people state you need a bearing, some don't...?

I've had a quote from DS, which comes to £161.28 (!!!) for the whole set plus a clutch cable. Which seems a bit steep? But there's not much I can do about it...

    friction plates- 71.28
    metal paltes - 28.35
    springs - 8.44
    nut - 5.70
    cable - 14.20
    postage - 5.85

    Plus VAT, total = 161.28.

    Thanks
    Adam

Bit early to have to go about changing the clutch, methinks. Silly question, but what oil have you been using?

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?

I also thought that, and I'm using car oil. Thought it would be ok because it had the same ratings lol. I did drop by halfords and pick up some of their semi-syn bike oil this morning, I'll change it when I get a chance (probably about a week away)

Very bad idea to use car oil. Car oils contain friction modifiers (or inhibitors, I forget which) which are not a good idea for the wet clutch in your bike. You might get away with changing the oil to a bike specific one and doing more regular oil changes. If not then I suspect that replacing the friction plates will need to be done. I would be very surprised if the plain plates would need to be changed (easy to check thickness).

    Re: Clutch slippage

I would go with oil as well, was convinced 100% mine needed a new clutch, changed the oil and after a few blats seems the problem is solved. also slackened and cleaned up the clutch cable so its nice and free then gradually re-adjusted.

Was really surprised but a 20 quid oil and filter change saved the 160 odd quid!

All thanks to the oh so wise on ere!

Doesn't exactly make car oil cheap to run in the bike then, if a clutch is 160 quid!

    Re: Clutch slippage

Oil and filter changed. Bike is slightly less happy at low revs, but gearchanges are nicer and I can't force the clutch to slip as easily. Hopefully I got away with it!
