    Cam chain tensioner check

My 01 650 rattles and after checking valve clearances/ carb balance I'd like to check the cam chain tensioners aren't sticking for peace of mind.
There is no guidance in the Haynes manual. From memory I understand each to be a sprung loaded rod that can only push harder on the chain guide at a rate governed by the spring.
Do I just remove each one and if all looks OK reset it to 'softest', refit and let the spring do the rest?
    Advice appreciated - ta.

    Rattling

Seems like it is a feature of the engine. Mine rattles ( from new ), the only other one I've seen and heard also rattles, other owners too have reported the same noise. I spoke to the Honda dealer, they also believe it is a " feature ".
The rattle seems to be more pronounced when cold, below 2000rpm, quite disconcerting, given the general quietness.

My 04 does too....but since the recent 600 service and me insisting on Silkolene it's definitely quieter.
