Fuel Exhaust on XL700 - effect on fuel consumption?

The time is coming round to me fitting a new exhaust onto my Transalp 700, and reading the posts on here, the Fuel Midi seems to be the popular choice (and at a fair price too).

From what I've read, most folks seem to think the bike runs well with this exhaust fitted - but I haven't seen any references to whether it has any effect on the fuel consumption of the bike. Has anyone noticed any difference - better, worse?

Also, on a slighly different tack - what effect does it have on insurance premiums? I'm going to check with my insurer, but I wondered what the collective wisdom of the forum was too.

    Anyone...?

Got and answer from Carole Nash regarding insurance - unlikely to affect insurance unless significant (greater than 5%) increase in power.

No idea - I bought a different brand and it was sold as OEM replacement which the insurer took as same...no performance enhancement. I certainly cant feel any difference on mine though ive left the baffles in. If anything, it breathes better at high speed but uses up a little more fuel in doing so but im talking at constant 80+.

I looked at the Fuel models also at the time, not much different.

    Hi mate,

Yeah, I'm not too worried about performance enhancement - let's face it, if you were bothered by that, you wouldn't start off with a Transalp... I'm more interested in whether there's any noticeable difference in MPG.

If you're cracking along at a constant 80+, then I'd expect things to get a little thirsty anyway - even with a standard can.

I've had my Fuel Exhaust on for a couple of weeks now and so far there is no difference in fuel consumption.
I have noticed that the motor is more responsive though

I think the mpg has improved marginally on my 650, since fitting the Fuel exhaust (say from about 46 to 48/9 mpg). However mpg seems to be improving anyway as I put more miles on the bike: at about 20,000 now - just about run-in to judge from some of the high mileages others here have reported!

There could be some truth in that - I'm sure these engines run better after 25 or 30k miles
My black 650 runs as sweet as ever after 70k miles - some of 'em VERY hard (except a 3rd gear whine at low revs....).

I have a feeling aftermarket cans make them (650) heavier on fuel both my Transrat & Frads bike were/are heavier on fuel than mine with standard exhaust - all serviced the "same" by me & all with 125 jets.

Can't say for the 700 though

    Phil
