I had a HISS hiccup after the winter service, v similar actions from the light - sometimes full brightness, sometimes dull & flickering.....
I stripped/lubed the kill switch starter button & slight improvement then wiggled the connector for the HISS pickup (r/h/s of clocks i think) it's the one with waterproof connector & that sorted it, so lubed it & i think i tightened the female connectors (gently with pliers).
    Been fine since

Blooming troublesome bike - last time was the headlight bulb went.
    Whatever next

Do waggle the kill switch as well. Plus, keep the second key away from the ignition when trying.

    Re: wont start

Yesterday I stripped the fairing and checked all the connector blocks and wiring (visual check as I don't have a multimeter or the knowhow to use one). Gave them all a spray of WD40 - including the HISS connector block. After giving the battery a full charge I tried to start her today with no luck.

The HISS light no longer flickers though, cheers Phil

After trying I opened both carb drain screws and nothing came out - so now I'm thinking fuel starvation? I've tried it with the fuel cap off.

    Next plan is to see if fuel tap blocked by;

    1) Sucking on vacuum pipe? Or do I need to pull fuel pipe off tap and press starter?

    2) If no fuel flow: Check vacuum pipe is airtight (no splits etc).

    3) If vacuum pipe is sound then strip fuel tap.

Does this sound like best next steps? And is the tap serviceable without ordering new parts? I thought there was a thread about it in last couple months but can't find it.........

    4) As a seperate issue; if I want to check for spark, do I take a plug cap off each cylinder and attach a spare plug to each - hold them against cylinder and press starter (leaving original plugs screwed in)?

    Thanks in advance.

Remove the fuel pipe from the tank & vac pipe from the cyl head, suck on the vac pipe & prepare to catch fuel from the tap!
If when sucking, if you are constantly drawing air, check the vac pipe for holes.

If you do get fuel flowing, reconnect the fuel hose & suck again for a few seconds - if you have drained the carbs they will need refilling before she'll start!

I presume there is fairly fresh fuel in the tank, kill switch is to "run" etc.....

The taps are generally reliable, when they fail they often go to "always on".

Test for spark; remove plug cap & plug, reconnect them & rest so the plug has an earth (away from plug hole!) & crank the engine as you would to start it.

Just lay the plug on the engine so that the metal body of the plug is in (good) contact with the metal of the engine.

Not on an 'Alp!!! One cylinder will fire as normal, and the plug in the other cylinder will ignite the mixture which blows straight out of the plug hole. It's LOUD. Or at least, that was my experience!

I would disconnect both HT leads from 1 cylinder and remove one plug. Plug the plug into an HT lead and touch the threads of the plug against the metal of the engine. Then hit the starter.

Using a new plug is possible, but most the time the coil etc is fine, but the plug is gummed up or worn, so there's no spark. Putting a new plug onto the HT lead will prove that the coil, etc, is providing the energy, but not that your spark plug is sparking.
