Is the lowered seat that much lower ?

    Howdy, Tall People.

I'm 5'6" and my legs are about 29". I've seen a 2nd hand TA650 that I really like and I can get my toes on the ground, but that's a bit too risky (I had a bad habit of dropping my old XT600 in London commuting )

Is getting hold of a lower seat going to make much difference ? Are there any shortish people out there with experience to share with me ?

I think I've read here that it's 30mm lower, but does that actually translate into significantly less leg length ?

    TIA

I think I'm the designated short arse consultant of the forum, so I'll field this one

My dad's about your height (and prob' about the same inside leg measurement) and he found that the lower seat made the bike totally manageable and is comfortable riding it. Before he was only just getting his toes down and would spend most of the time riding it praying for lights not to turn red! I was quite happy with the taller seat but chose to get the lower seat just for the extra safety margin should I need to get my hooves on the floor in a hurry.

So, in short (snigger!), I think you'll be more than happy with the alp and a low seat.

Thanks for the encouragement FJ, I'm all fired up now

But If finances mean I have to go for an older TA600, will it still be possible to get a shorty seat for it ?

Not an off the shelf one as far as I know. You could always get the one already on it resculpted though. Don't know what it'd cost though.

Get the 650 - you know it makes sense!!

I reckon the boys at GA Wells & Son would do it while you wait for £20.

I've never heard of them, but a search gives me... Unit 17, Chaucer Business Park, Sevenoaks, Kent TN15 6PJ

OK, many thanks for that. I'd much rather have the 650, but at least I know that a 600 is a viable option.

    Cheers

Re: Is the lowered seat that much lower ?

    Hi there

I'm about 5'8" but only 29" inside leg, and I think my ex-Police 650 'Alp might have the lowered seat. I can't quite sit flat-footed, but there's enough foot to ground contact for it to feel stable. The 'Alp is the 'tallest' bike I've owned, but doesn't feel in any way precarious...even when traffic light changes threaten to catch me off balance.

    Joe
