    hagon shock

just ordered a hagon rear shock for my transalp. they are building it for the weight i specify due to the original being too soft. i'm 16 and a half stone plus kit plus loads of work crap i carry in the panniers and top box (including a lap top, loads of paper work, 2 pairs of boots, etc etc). i've asked for it to be set up for approx 22 stone. £295 including 2 yrs unlimited mileage warranty, and at the end of 2 yrs you just send it back to be overhauled for about £85 and then you get another 2 yrs warranty. bargain methinks! i'll let you know how i get on!

Heard a few bad things about Hagon a few years ago but, I think quality has improved. I spent £500 on an Ohlins for the old R100GS and it was a bloody nightmare. The first was faulty and was exchanged for a new one which lasted about 6k miles. This was also exchanged under warranty but, I'd lost faith in Ohlins and sold it immediately. I put the old, original shock back on the bike and it stayed on it 'till I sold it. LB.

I bought a Hagon for a 1200 Bandit (uuugh) some years back, couldn't get a decent ride from it after lots of fiddling.

Phoned Hagon to be told (rudely) that theres nothing wrong with the shock and I'd get used to it!!!!

Sent it back after a month, got a phone call next day, the shock had the wrong spring on and too much gas or oil or whatever they put inside (the wrong shock then...).

Sold the shock and the bike shortly afterwards.

Ironically, spoke to Hagon at Stafford, enquiring about their hydraulic preload adjuster for an Alp.

"It wont fit" I was abruptly told,
Can you tell me what the thread size is? "No they only fit our shocks".
But it's there can I have a look at it as the thread size looks similar? " No they only fit or shock's"

Guess they don't want to sell me one then.

Sean, when you have both shock's to hand could you measure (accurately) the thread diameter and pitch (orig Alp is 1.5mm pitch ie 15mm for 10 threads) Diameter is between 48-50 mm (difficult to measure on the bike).

This will (or won't) put my mind at ease as I really want to be able to adjust oreload easily.

I want to be able to do that as well.

Maddest thing ever adjusting on pre-load TA - unscrew side panel, battery off, batter box off, struggle with C-rings without a c-ring spanner. Put it all back together - go for a ride, decide I need more/less, repeat until fed up.

I've only altered it once which was enough!

St'd was a bit too much sag at the back, 2up way too much sag so tightened preload by about 4mm.
Now not quite enough sag solo, spot on solo with a bit of luggage, a bit too much sag 2 up.

Honda arent interested, after market shock manufacturers arent interested (unless you want a new shock with hydraulic preload adjuster), had a look at Stafford for any original equipment shocks with either a hyd adjuster or cam ring adjuster at the bottom of the shock.

I notice that an NTV/revere have hyd adjuster (dunno if it will fit) and CBR6 and NC30's have a cam ring adjuster at the bottom, donno if they could be made to fit (in a farmer stylie!)?

If anyone knows of a knackered shock that fits the above description I might be interested.

I'd like this glaring omission sorted

Adjusting the spring preload on the 650

What a PITA to adjust the spring preload on the 650 Tranny. I found removing the rear shock a pain also, there's not a lot of clearance to remove the shock. got around that when I removed the colostomy bag ( subchamber ) and replaced with a straight pipe.
At least now the removal of the rear shock is easier, the swinging arm drops further allowing more clearance.

YEAH, I'd sure like a hydraulic spring preload adjuster if there is one available, or if someone can show me one, could possibly machine one up.
So what is it exactly that Hagon make ??

Hmm, and I always thought Hagon (and the mentioned Ohlins) was the dog's thingies in shock-absorbers. But then I also once believed TA/AT's had great build-quality
Guess I am just a gullable old sod

I had a White Power once on a BMW R100GS-PD wich was really good (or should I say, the standard Boge shock it replaced was shamelessly poor).

    Ok, thanx Sean

Jackafrica; did you carry out any other mods to the bike when you had the colostomy bag () removed, did it run ok and any improvement in mpg.

I'm due to get the modded pipes back and fitted tomorrow, trouble is I'm off on a long trip in a week's time and won't get much chance to give the bike a proper trial before hand.
