hello. was wondering about 'green laning'. rules differ from country to country. what can and can't you do in scotland? just got a dommie and fancy off-roading but not sure of the rules. i'm a sensible chap ( ) and want to do it properly. the trespass rules dont apply. know any routes near Loch Lomond to start on? all replies very welcome

Don't know about Scotland, but the rules seem very relaxed in France. Most tracks are open to all vehicles and are deemed public rights of way. I bought a French 4x4 magazine to find out the rules and was pleasantly surprised.

It's totally different in Scotland, even some Scottish trail riders don't know what's legal and what's not. I believe the Ordnance Survey don't show vehicular rights of way on anything north of the border because there is no equivalent to the definitive map up there.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

Trespass laws do apply in Scotland, but for the land owner to contest it he/she has to put up a lot of money to do so.
Done quite a bit of trail riding in Scotland and never had any real bother.
Loads to do around kinlochleven just don`t do it when the Six Days is on. The Coriarick pass is legal to vehicles and can be quite challenging depending on the weather/ground conditions. You can also be prosecuted for damaging the Coriarick pass as it is a national monument built by General Wade, so watch how you go. Last time i traveled along it on the north side a locked gate has been put on a bridge. It has a cut-out for walkers and mountain bikes. Lightish motorbikes can be lifted over it with help. It is possible to ride through the river to get by.

Get this book http://www.amazon.co.uk/Scottish-Hil.../dp/0954673506 it`s a good reference.
Look for drove roads, coffin routes and milatary roads, avoid any reference to private tracks. Cross reference with ordnance survey maps, the above book has a map of all the tracks.
You could join the http://www.scotways.com/ (Scottish Rights of Way Society) to get info on routes and difficulty, just don`t tell them you have a motorbike.

    p.s. I didn`t tell you this

as a general rule in france, if it ain't clearly marked private, then it's fair game. I've always found the farmers (vinyard workers & owners where I am) perfectly aimiable & friendly so long as you respect them & their livleyhood.
