    camping in winter?

Where can one camp in winter in the UK? the more remote the better. This does not have to be bike accessible (some would be great) . Walking is fine too. (teleskiing is not out either).

Firstly, I would consider an RM/Para Winter Mountain Survival Course (Normally training in Norway). Secondly, I would be asking myself why? And thirdly, I would look towards Knoydart, Easter Ross or Sutherland, that's remote enough. Good Luck.

It is normally fine to camp high in any of our mountain regions, but conditions can/will be arctic. I've had about -20 Celcius, with force 7-8 winds in the Lake District, and well more than that in Scotland. Is wonderful though, you can end up with the mountain to yourself, 'specially if you start you walk in at sunset.

    Some good places -
    Red Tarn, Helvellyn, Lake District,
    Cwm Cniefion, Ogwen, North Wales,
Top of Tryfan, North Wales, although you won't get a tent pitched, it is possibly the best winter bivy site I've ever used. Feels really alpine, and is as cold too!

You can camp wild in the highlands of scotland I think the rule is that you are suposed to be above the tree line and that you move on after one night.
Camped in the lake district also never had any bother as long as you dont make a mess and pack up early in morning.
There is also some campsites open all year round in both locations if you wanted more comfort, like a bog.

The campsites in the walking regions, such as the Lakes, stay open all year. I've camped there at New Year and the place was heaving.

Xander If you want remote try the extreme NW of Scotland up to Cape Wrath there is a whole area that is a national park/MoD land where there is no access for vehicles. You can ride around to Durness but then you have to take a foot passenger ferry to the Cape Wrath peninsular.
    Have fun

If you're going to camp in the winter and want something a little extreme/great fun/bike related, then you have to go to 'Der Elephant Treffen' in the black forest in Germany, lots of like minded nutters camping in the snow, great fun. I intend to go myself, but not this winter as I'll be on the road to Timbuktu when it's on, but definetly next year, here is a link to few photographs that will give the general idea.

    Mr Xander,

If you had requested information for an EXPERIENCED cold climate outdoors person to go winter camping I am sure I would have recommended several in Lakes, Nth Wales, Scotland ... I prefer winter in the hills any time!
