    Travel Insurance

I'm off to Morocco next May, initially for two weeks with other forum members, but may stay on a bit longer if I get the burning desire to.

Simple question really then... does anybody have any recommendations for PERSONAL / MEDICAL Insurance?

Have you done similar? What did you use?

I know it's ONLY Morocco, not exactly RTW, but I have to consider I may be riding alone if I stay on when the rest of the group head home, so is there anything else I should be considering?

    Cheers

The only trouble with these thing is they NEVER seem to cover Riding Motorcycles etc.

Was really looking for advice from someone that has done the groundwork already, or can recommend a company or highlight any pitfalls.

    Re: Travel Insurance

I just bought/added worldwide cover to my "free" policy I get from the bank. I asked them to explicitly state that riding my own motorcycle was covered - which they did in a letter. The problem with any type of insurance policy is that you don't know how good it really is, or I suppose really how good the company is, until you need to claim on it.

Does your policy also cover ALL medical expenses whilst abroad (e.g the ambulance/drugs etc) and does it cover medical evacuation/re-patriation/air ambulance to your own country if any specialist services are needed.

This is what I'm specifically interested in, just in case the worse happens.

Don't really know without checking, but it must have been fairly comprehensive - I left it to my wife to sort out and as she is a travel nurse (ie a nurse wot does travel jabs, advice etc) she knows what to look for and was keen to be sure I would come back in one piece with minimal cost to us ( well at least i think she was!!).

Have a great trip. Honestly, I'm not jealous.

The one thing you absolutely MUST, MUST make sure is that your travel insurance covers "extreme sports". When we went to the Stella last year, and took out insurance, "normal" holiday insurance does NOT cover you, if you have an accident whilst on a motorcyle - despite the fact that this is your normal mode of transport.

There was a long thread on the UKGSer site about a chap who, very sadly, had a fatal accident and his family were advised that he was not covered as he was riding a motorcycle.

You will also need to advise your motorbike insurers that you will be travelling abroad. If you already have breakdown cover it costs about another £30.00 to cover for foreign travel.

No one ever expects, or wants to require the services of an insurance company, but it is worth paying the bit extra to cover you. We took out annual insurance which covered motorcycling both on and off road and I think it cost about £120.00 for the year.

    Re: Travel Insurance

Most standard travel policies exclude riding a motorcycle or a motorcycle above 125CC. Plenty do cover it though, see the wiki. I have an annual family travel policy with Fortis covering worldwide and business use and it was about £200 for the year.
I'd probably double check with them about a bike tour of Morocco before leaving though.

Look to the Wiki, my son. As The Taffia says, there's a list of insurance companies the cover trips on large bikes. The good news is that Morocco is - for travel insurance purposes - considered to be part of Europe! So Europe only cover will be okay.

When I went to Morocco some years ago I also took a first aid kit that contained hypodermic needles, a canular and so on to reduce the risk of picking up a nasty infection. I suspect, though, that Moroccan hospitals are at least as hygenic as British ones, so it was probably over-kill.

BTW, if you find any other companies that can be added to the Wiki, add them yourself or send a PM to me and I'll add them.
