    insurance for Romania

    Hi guys,

I am covered with ebike (UK), and they will cover me anywhere in the EU except Romania.
    The web site says

Bulgaria and Romania have recently joined the EU, but at present these countries are not listed as part of the Territorial Limits in our policy documentation.

Southern Rock however has agreed to provide RTA (Road Traffic Act) cover for clients travelling in these countries in the interim.

Under the terms of the Third European Union Directive, vehicles used in EU countries must provide the minimum cover required in the country the vehicle is registered, or the country in which it is being used; whichever is the greater.

The minimum level of cover available in the UK is RTA and offers the following cover:

The 1988 Road Traffic Act provides for unlimited indemnity in respect of bodily injury or death to third parties, a £250,000 limit for loss of or damage to third party property, claimants’ costs and expenses, and emergency medical treatment and hospital charges arising out of the vehicle use.

Does this mean i need to get an other policy or is the Southern Rock RTA enough for being on the road legally. Do I have to contact Southern Rock? I am asking here first cus insurance companies tend to try to sell you stuff that you do not need, if you dont know what you are asking for.

    Cheers

Xander, I think that says you have either got UK RTA cover (as they describe) in Romania and Bulgaria, or if their equivalent is a greater level of insurance then you get that.

So, yes you are covered, but at the absolute minimal level - basically unlimited cover for 3rd party bodily injury/death, up to £250K for damage to third party property, and cover for your emergency treatment & hospital costs if you are injured through using the bike.

I think the ebike policy gives you fully comp / TPF&T (whatever you have) within the territorial limits, so everywhere else in Europe you are fully covered to the same extent as at home.

Not sure any bike policy covers this (in bold). Within the EU you need your health insurance card (EU nationals). Xander, unless you have an EU passport you'll need medical cover.
The key on the bike insurance is whether or not your comprehensive cover extends there. If not, any damage or even theft of the bike, would not be insured.

oooh, yes I think you are right, the clause (as quoted by Xander) seems to only cover the 3rd party's expenses, emergency medical treatment and hospital costs.

I've had a look at some websites online and found some good information on health insurance such as this one on private health insurance and this site on general advice about insurance. Hope these help and enjoy the trip!
