    Camping in Normandy

I am hoping to go to Normandy with my 12yo lad at the end of May to spend a few days looking at the D-Day sites and having some nice meals.

BUT, with the pound plummeting against the Euro, a low cost trip is creeping up if we go the B&B route as originally intended last year when i did my researches! So, I am now pondering some camping...

The lad is a scout and has done a small amount of camping and even has a small 2 man tent (cheapie from tescos) but no cooking gear etc. We do have sleep mats and bags though. Now, I know there are a load of hardened campers here who think nothing of taking off for the Arctic circle with a bag and a bivvie sack, but I am NOT one of these, heck, I am 50 and need a spot of comfort...

So, has anyone got some ideas or recomenndations on campsites and the likely costs/night in Normandy please? From a spot of research, B&B will be in the order of 130-200 Euros for 3 nights for the 2 of us. I can possibly justify purchasing a better tent as I hope to get to Spain later in the year if the elbow/arm holds up with a shorter trip...

    Cheers John.

I have been given a recommendation for a campsite website at http://www.campingfrance.com/recherc...egion=04&lg=uk Which looks like a good one and will I am sure have your site on it.

It would appear under £15/night for two is an average sort of rate for the area.

    Hi.
I have camped alot in this area, stay near the coast and there is plenty of sites, go for the small towns away from the main beaches these are cheaper. I paid around 7-12euros per night. Have a good trip.

On the basis of some helpful words here, I have invested in a tent, we don't have to use it if the weather is rubbish, but it does offer an option. The daughters are also mumbling about festivals this year, so it may well come in there too! Anything that gets them away from us here.... teenagers!

    Re: Camping in Normandy

Hi Steve, i too am planning a trip to the Normandy area this year, in July.

From what i can gather there are numerous sites and advanced booking is neither necessary or reccomended. Do as insainwayne suggests and try and find a site in one of the many smaller towns/villages. You will be fine in your tent i am sure and your lad will love it. If the weather turns or you are struggling with comfort go to a cheap hotel for a night or too, Premier Classe are the equivalent of our Travel Lodges, or look for small town b&b's.

    Have a great trip.

    Cheers for the good advice!

If I can sort out the timing, I am hoping to join an XRV group at the beginning of June in Normandy which would make for an easy re-introduction to French travel! SWMBO is having a few glitches about the lad being pulled out from school for 3 days. Personally, I reckon life experiences can be as important as school...

Not stayed in the Premier places, but have used Novotels and similiar in the past and you make a good point, after all it is a break, NOT a test
