    For Tartiflette

Boil new potatoes in their skins
When they are cold remove the skins and slice
Fry lardons (or bacon) and sliced onions.
Mix together the potatoes, lardons and onions and place in an ovenproof dish.
Take a whole brie and cut in half horizontally so you've got 2 round pieces of cheese.
Lay the brie on top of the potatoes rind side up and put in a fairly hot oven until the cheese has melted.

    Et voila!

For a slightly different line the dish with puff pastry before filling and fold the edges of the pastry over the top to make a pie

Absolutely love it. Over in France they have a special tarteflette cheese but brie is just as good.

What would be a good substitute that is still available? At present I am packing curry paste into plastic bags but it becomes a struggle if they get close to empty. I get the stuff all over myself.
Small baby food jars, though they are quite heavy (compared to a 35mm film pot). Although glass, they're not particularly fragile.

If you boil a tin without making a hole, don't (some) the content squirt out when you start to open it, 'cos of the pressure ?

No, because there is no compressed gas space. Tins are filled to the brim. Liquids don't expand significantly when heated.

Although there might be just a tiny droplet that splurts out around the first cut of the can-opener, it won't travel more than a couple of millimetres.

    I've done this countless times.

That's good but my luggage includes soft panniers so I avoid carrying any breakables, like glass.

Of course, small baby food jars tend to be most available to people with small babies. That isn't me. But pesto jars are about the same size.

Take one french stick, cut in half, fill with 8oz of lard or dripping.

Best eaten with a large mug of tea. For the more health conscious a portion of mushy peas makes for an interesting side salad.

Lard, good for growing kids and great food for invalids.

    UP THE WORKERS!
