    easy-pack but good camping food!

right - on a bike space is at a premium but when we camp we want good food and not that crappy self heating ration crap!

soo i had an idea that i tried out this weekend!

    recipie:- Tortilla Pizza

    1) take tortilla - (easily packed and already flat so cannot be squished!)
    2) smear with some tomato puree (in a tube again - easy pack)
    3) add some cheese - small block great for this and then cheese on toast!
    4) add some salami/meat of choice (cheap and again already flat if bought in packet ready sliced from aldi/netto)
    5) put in frying pan and heat for a couple of mins until the cheese melts and the tortilla is good and hot!
    6) eat and enjoy fresh pizza wherever you are!

this is easier with a trangia than some other cookers but it works with any!

    enjoy

    fold it over for a quesadila, my favourite filling;
(trust me! sounds vile but isnt) jar of sundried toms juice n all, chopped or dried chilli to taste, a tin of hotdogs (sans brine), 1/2packet of reconstituted smash mash all squished together in a poly bag. you want it school mash sort of consistency, this is enough for 6/8 full size tortillas.
get a bag of grated cheese and sprinkle over the tortilla, bite the corner off the squish bag and 'ice' a big blob of goo around one half of the middle about a cm thick. leave a decent edge. fold it over and toast on a lightly oiled (non-stick, dont bother) hot pan. hopefully the edges seal with cheese if you got the filling amount right, pressing down occasionally helps, and you get a lovely ooze out the sides. (it must have oozage, if you want a perfect quesadila then youre too anal for camping anyway, get lost)

invent your own fillings, jam+ham is a goodun, but watch out for the napalm effect on your lips

Mmmmmm I like this thread!! Tortilla pizzas & quesadilas!! ... One has become a little bored of cooking pasta & sauces & greasy fry ups for breakfast ..... In France I do get through alot of Camambert & ham baguettes on the road.

Not so sure about this ham & Jam thing ... Marmalade & cheese, now we're talkin

Nice one! And if you get a packed whole salami sausage from Lidl (and other places no doubt) they do not need chilling until opened so have a better shelf life if needed, Of course the cheese will be going runny by then....

hi pooh, marmalade+cheese, there you go. try the ham+jam, it does work especially with a strong dry cured ham.
when next in france get some roquefort to melt, it'll be the stinkiest ooze this side of an old ladies leg but one you actually want to lick, unless you are a very sick puppy

Get yourself down to your local stockist of oriental-style dehydrated instant noodles (not "Super noodles", tut tut). They go well with anything.

    I like "Mama" brand.

Re: easy-pack but good camping food!

If we're discussing instant food (just add to hot water) then don't forget bulgur wheat, cous cous and quinoa. All sold in the form of dehydrated "granules", they boil up just as easily as rice or pasta, except quicker (using less fuel).

I use cous cous as a "fill me right up" bulking agent in many dishes, I put it in with sauces or leave it to one side sitting in very hot water for 5 minutes, which it soaks up.

Texturised vegetable protein - "TVP" - also known as dried soya mince - adds instant bulk and protein in the same way the above staples add bulk and carbohydrate. And it is available in "savoury" flavour, or as mrs severs calls it, "brown flavour".

Dried mushrooms are often tastier than fresh ones, especially the bland white small cup mushrooms in supermarkets. I buy "Black Fungus" from my local chinese/asian supermarket.

Dried strips of pre-fried tofu add a "meaty" texture and absorb flavour very well.

All the above weight almost nothing in their dehydrated form.
