My experience of France is that you ride until you feel like stopping, pull of the main road and there will be a campsite sign very soon. It will be clean and welcoming and there will be a bar not too far away.

just the sort of thing I was going to say.

I was last in the Ardeche in the '80s - used to go there or thru there every year for about 5 years. Loads of campsites especially in the honeypot areas near Vallon pont d'arc, and Pont St Esprit - the town at the other end of the Gorge. I always to looked for smaller less organised campsites than the big commercial ones, but as its nearly 20 years since I was last there they will all have changed. The gorge road itself is/was awesome as are almost all roads in the area. I never did any offroading mind, but I suspect the area is absolutley minted with awesome trails.

If you go and play in or near the river watch out for the naturists though - they are everywhere. Believe me I know, I looked out for them.

I agree. I suggest scanning ahead on your GPS/map, if you see a lake or such (a sea ) just off route, there is a high lightlyhood of there being a campsite close by.

    Re: Campsites

Just a little North in the Drome region between Lyon and Valence, Joel, a French friend of mine owns a tidy little campsite at Charmes sur la Herbasse, called Les Falquets. It is situated near the Vercours mountains, a stunning playground of twisty roads and deep caverns. Sadly, the campsite closes down sometime in September for the end of season , but fortunately i'm visiting in August
