Question Kerosene and white gas (Coleman Fuel)

    Also posted on HUBB

When using my stove I know that to go from White Gas to Kerosene a change of jet is needed.

However, I just bought a kerosene lantern from a sort of bric-a-brac shop but I have no Kerosene. In this case would white gas work just as well or is it too volatile to use in one of those lanterns?

Tell me quick before curiosity gets the better of me and I blow up my flat...

Coleman fuel is just as dangerous in a paraffin lamp as petrol, in fact they are the same thing except that petrol has a few additives, try it if you like, but let us all know when - - so's we can look for the
    fireball in the sky

Sorry it took so long to answer:

I spent 30 minutes looking for my eyebrows together with my left earlobe (my neighbour did not appreciate them as an extra seasoning to her salad) and typing with my nose is a lot hard than it looks...

If you want kerosene but can't seem to find any, note that diesel fuel is very similar and may work, and white spirit from B&Q is labelled as actually being kerosene.

Wrong Diesel is not similar, Throw a match in petrol and you have a fireball, throw a match in kerosene (Paraffin) and it will go out.If you have a wick then it will burn, I once used a leaf as a wick.
Diesel will not burn unless it is extremely hot. Diesel is a compression ignition, compressed air in cylinder is heated then diesel is injected causing combustion.

OK fair enough (I meant diesel is similar to kero, not similar to Coleman fuel).

But White Spirit in Britain is easily available from DIY shops and, these days, is actually kerosene. It's more expensive than buying "real" kero (like Esso Blue for example) but at least you can get it, and at about £1 a litre from B&Q it's cheaper than Coleman fuel so it makes your stove slightly cheaper to run.

You say that diesel fuel and kerosene are different. But I've run my diesel car on kero in the past, in an emergency. So they are not very different.

But then I've run the same engine on used cooking oil so maybe it's just a very versatile engine?

Diesel engines can run on kero, the military lorries do in a crisis, But kero powered equipment will not run on Diesel.
