    Edinburgh Campsites...

I'll be camping the night before the TLD charity ride, i beleive we are setting off from Edinburgh castle and i know a few are staying in the West End Tavelodge so....

Can any of our Scottish brothers recommend a good campsite to pitch a tent close to either of those two?

I was thinking of pitching it in the Castle (King Craig ) but i don't think that would be a good idea haha...

    Thanks,

    Craig.

    Re: Edinburgh Campsites...

Campsites will be about 1/2 hour bus ride out of town, there's one at Silverknowes by the shore (belongs to the caravan club - http://www.caravanclub.co.uk/Plannin...csid=EDINBURGH) and there's one just opposite where I live, at Mortonhall (www.meadowhead.co.uk).

I'd leave stuff in panniers secured to bike rather than just in your tent - they're both next to some slightly dodgy areas, though not unpleasant themselves, and I don't know what security is like.

    Hope that helps!!

    I'll be gone by then

    Laura

Howdenhall's not that bad, is it? I looked at a house for sale there once! Or did you mean Balmwell/Gracemount? Either way, I didn't know you could pitch a tent at Mortonhall. I had rather assumed that when the UK Tandem Club members were here a year or two ago, they all stayed in caravans! I'd probably go for Mortonhall over Silverknowes, personally. If nothing else, it's easier to get to from the city bypass, and probably easier to ride into town.

Looking at google maps you can pitch a tent at Mortonhall. There is also an excellent pub onsite called the stables bar which does good beer and food..

There is also a garden centre at the enterance to the campsite that I think has a cafe so you should be able to grab a bacon roll or similar

Silverknowes is the other campsite mentioned and that has stunning views over the forth and there is also a backpackers hostel across the road but if I was to chose one it would be Mortonhall based on security and the pub.

While I'm at it have a look here.

    A is Mortonhall campsite
    B is Silverknowes Campsite
    C is the westend travellodge
    D is Edinburgh Castle

Yup, having lived in Edinburgh for the first 20 years of my life I'd deffo go for Mortonhall over Silverknowes.

As has been said, it's a stonesthrow from the bypass for your arrival, and easier to get into Town both for a "cheeky half" the night before, and for the RV on the Saturday morning itself - all of about 10 minutes.

It's a nice site, well maintained and quite spacious so if there's a few of you pitching up and you give them advance warning they might give you a little corner all to yourselves.

It's also very handy for my folks place, where I'll be kipping so have the kettle on and I'll pop over for a brew as it's about 3 minutes walk.

Feck the camping. Tell your mum and dad thanks ever so much for putting 45 of us up I've booked a small pitch for them both, and Winxp's tent is lovely so they should be warm and comfortable.

Currently trying to book the campsite but noones answering the phone

Update - ok, we're now booked in winxp

For information, anyone interested, it's £17 for a pitch and two motorcycles and there's plenty of spaces.
