scotland west coast advice

OK I need some advice on the best roads to take in.

I've got from weds night to saturday to get from birmingham to the west coast and back. I've been up to Skye, Applecross etc before and I'm keen to explore a bit further south.

I'd like to get as far as possible from birmingham on weds night. I could make it to the Kingshouse but I'd be riding in the dark for the last 3 hours. Or I might stop earlier e.g. loch lomond.

Then I was thinking go to Mull of Kintyre (via Oban or Loch Awe??? your opinions please) on Thurs.

Back up to rejoin the A82 somehow???? on Friday. Is it worth crossing Loch Fyne and heading up the other side?

So any advice on roads not to miss or good campsites, or if anyone wants to join in let me know ASAP!

Cheers

Personally I would give the road to Campbell town a miss. The road from Fort William to Malliag is bonny as is the road round by ardnemuchan.

up the workers!

Re: scotland west coast advice

up to Ullapool then on to Durness... then that's you at the top

even if you just get as far a Laxford Bridge then hang a right on the A838 to lairg then loop back on the A837 to Ledmore, then back to Ullapool... or turn right and do it again

Throw a few sickies in and take a week

Re: scotland west coast advice

thanks for replies gents

Yes I've been up to Torridon and Ullapool a couple of times before, awesome country. But not this time, I want to get back for a bit of mud on sunday.

Think i'll take cookingfat's advice and head out to Ardnamurchan via Mallaig and back by ferry to Onich.

Weather is looking good!

If you're going as far as Ardnamurchan, why not take in Mull as well. Kilchoan at the end of the peninsula, is a dead end -- take the small ferry Kilchoan to Tobermory, do Mull, then ferry from Mull to Lochaline, make your way back on the mainland from there.
The road from Salen to Kilchoan can be described as " interesting "

You wont go wrong there. Forget camping sites for chrissakes - just camp where you want; it's not the Bull Ring, you're free.

Re: scotland west coast advice

Following on from LowFlyer if you do stick with Ardnumuchan and you want to take in Mull try the Lochaline - Fishnish ferry, then return on the Oban ferry at Craignure. Personally I think Cal/Mac should fly the skull and crossbones, not cheap.
