Scotland, here I come!!

Greetings and salutations, Scottsmen!

I'm heading up next Sunday for a 2 week trip!!! Looking for remote castles in the Highlands, distant unreachable villages , peace , quiet and ground to put the tent up and burn some meat.

Any tips, directions or even someone who care to join us and show us the way? Just me and the girlfriend in a 93AT.

Re: Scotland, here I come!!

Some of the best riding roads I have found are in Scotland.

I would say riding up through Glen Coe and into Fort William a must as is taking a trip down to the Eileen Donnan Castle on the Kyle of Lochalsh a huge must. The roads going down there are stunning

Hello Sharri!!

Thanks for your input. I've added that road to my roadbook.

How did the AT deal go?

Re: Scotland, here I come!!

It was a bit of a worry, a guy from Lithuania bought it pff ebay and communication was a challenge .

We had a nice Russian van driver meet us at the local services to hand over the bike and collect the cash.

Did get a good price for it though

Just back from 5 days up there. Anywhere north (or west) of Glencoe and you wont be disappointed. Ullapool is a good base for a couple of days as the roads in all directions (except west as there aren't any) are all brilliant.

Re: Scotland, here I come!!

A93 from Perth to Braemar = brilliant & testing roads, with amazing views.
You can wild camp next to the river along the stretch after the ski centre, just before Braemar.

Into Braemar, head for the Linn of Dee. More great, but narrower, roads with very little traffic. More opportunities to wild camp in the midst fantastic scenery (was up there this weekend )

Head for Tomintoul via the Lecht ski centre - take the B976 off of the A93 after Braemar. Even more bendy roads with great scenery.

Head for Aviemore via B970 & Nethybridge - more bends. Take the old A9 now numbered the B9152 to Kingussie & Newtonmore - bends . The A86 then takes you to Spean Bridge, onto the A82. Choice here of west for Fort William or east for Fort Augustus - both busy with tourists but still great views of the Great Glen. As you roll up the A86 you come to Laggan. Turn off the main road and head for Melgarve on the old military road (General Wades road). It is a dead end (unless you are willing to tackle some really technical off roading as you get near Fort Augustus on the military road) but you can wild camp along this stretch. Again, fantastic views and empty roads.

From either Fort William or Fort Augustus just head north and the countryside just opens up in front of you the further you head north (the A87 gets my vote for bestest combination of open, sweeping bends with tight, challenging curves popping up along the whole of the run to Kyle of Lochalsh).

If you want some company for a day whilst travelling in this neck of the woods, let us know and I'm sure several of the Highland dwellers would be only too happy to join you (weekends are easiest for most, but you never know, I've still got some holidays left )

Enjoy your ride and stay safe.

Steve T

Re: Scotland, here I come!!

I've posted on a few 'where to ride' threads, championing the section of the west coast from Lochcarron to Gairloch & beyond.. eg.
Bealach Na Ba Challenge
(Well, I was brought up there - the peninsula just north of Loch Torridon, that is)
Honestly, if you're that far up-n-over, and the weather's ok, it'd be a crime to miss out Skye, Applecross, Torridon, Loch Maree, Gairloch, Aultbea, Gruinard - Ullapool. A fine days riding / jaw-dropping views. Be aware, however, of midge-risk in calmer, dull spots.
