    Laptops and Travelling

In April I went down to Morocco and found out my mobile phone did not work. I had purchased from Amazon (before the trip) a secondhand Asus Eee notebook running Linux (not microsoft) which has a solid state memory. The machine was brilliant linking into wireless networks with no hassle and was even in the back box when I dropped the bike. Does any one know of a similer machine which I could get as a replacement?

I bought an HP mini-book, much the sameness as the Samsung and the Acer, 2gig RAM, 160gb HD, 1.6gHz, 3/4 size keyboard, etc etc external DVD writer for under 300quid. Absolute bee's knees. Use it mainly to up/download new waypoints and tracks from my Zumo, oh, and upload music too! Excellent kit.

Samsung NC10. Hasn't got a solid state drive though.
Won loads of awards in the PC Press.
Battery life of some 7 or 8 hours. Just works.
And this post is being typed on one.

I got an NC10, they are really good

You can also get a 9 cell battery for them, to give even longer life.

    Re: Laptops and Travelling

we have been for ages looking for a bombproof pc to use in a rally car for loggong and video file storage, for a while the EEE was really the option past using a toughbook but there may be a possibility of other options in the future with the advance of pico ITX motherboads and SS memory.

Im not a 'puter geek so no point in me trying to give the techy stuff (sure someone out there can) but these pc components are tiny (motherboard is just over 3" square!!) and they use cards and not a standard hard drive, they have no processor fan so more space/weight saved.

    Re: Laptops and Travelling

I've bought an eee PC 901 like Tendays with a solid state hard drive specifically for a planned rtw trip. Having used it at home I just love it - great battery life, light, doesn't burn your lap, quick boot-up. Mine was just £165 new as well!

    Highly recommended.
