I know people who have done a lap of the Sahara on an XR600 and an XL600, with a 20something liter tank and a 5L canister strapped to the back. Seems to have worked out well as they're still around.
you would have to be crazy to take a Vara across the sahara on dirt tracks

I haven't seen any larger tanks for the vara - did see some for the drz I have 38ltr I think which at 50 to the gallon would make sense.
Think on the vara you would need a couple of extra cans strapped on for safe measure.

nice slim tanks can be fit behind/on top of panniers

well thanks for all the replys guys!!

i will be taking the XR6! (well thats the plan!)

and i am just curious of what people think is the norm for these kind of trips!

as i think i have found a monster

i have found myself a rather rare, 40L acerbis tank!

    yes thats right 40L!

its a monster tank! acerbis stopped making them 10 years ago!

and yes it will weigh a metric <@#> ton when full!!

currently looking for some pannier racks, if any one knows of any

might as well take the vara, what with all the weight i will have

    40 liter

That's going to be more than enough, might even turn into a handicap.

Then again, you don't have to fill it all the way, and then the weight will be down low as I suspect this thing hangs quite a way down across the engine.

Make sure you can still ride standing up on the pegs though.

And you will want to think about fitting an oil cooler on these old hotheaded aircooled beasts.
