    just a question...

but what would people think is a good enough fuel range for long distance riding outside of Europe.

    i.e. rtw.....

potential remote places like north african desert, far easten russia etc

As for range the longer the better, for what your after the biggest possible tank and a couple of cans, backed with maps a good route and spare fuel filters
    have fun

    Re: acceptable tank range?

One of the longer sections I encountered in North Africa was in excess of 300 miles between fuel stations. The AT can manage this but speed had to be kept down to 50-60 mph maximum. At those speeds the AT is getting 57 mpg fully laden. Standard tank will hit 260-280 miles on tank plus 5ltr of fuel will get an extra 60 miles

Not sure what bike you're running but 300+ range should allow a margin of error. Not all fuel stations were where they were supposed to be. Some were no longer fuel stations and some had no electricity and some had no petrol

It was the same in Eastern Europe where fuel stations generally 100 miles apart but some had the same fuel / electricity problems especially if your are riding in remote areas

02 RD07a RWB, Powerbronze tall screen, Remus Grand Prix, TT crash bars, TT pannier frame, Zega style panniers, Alpos top box,TT bar risers, TT headlamp guard, Heated grips, mainstand, Heidenau K60s for road and light offroad, TKC80s for the dirty stuff, Scottoiler, Autocomm, TT Zumo mount, Zumo 550 and most of all A BIG GRIN !!! Oh, and a very nice RD04 HRC coloured Marathon Replica

Looking at your sig line I'd assume you're taking the XR, not the 'dero.

I know people who have done a lap of the Sahara on an XR600 and an XL600, with a 20something liter tank and a 5L canister strapped to the back. Seems to have worked out well as they're still around.

On the Varadero 180-200 miles is more than enough. Because by that time your due a drink and stretch of the legs. I always rest my trip counter 1 after each fill and try to look to fill up around 40 miles less than when reserve would normally come on just to be safe

Are you thinking of doing this on the varadero? My carb one does 200 miles just int the uk but I am sure that would be different in Africa where conditions would vary. I haven't seen any larger tanks for the vara - did see some for the drz I have 38ltr I think which at 50 to the gallon would make sense.
Think on the vara you would need a couple of extra cans strapped on for safe measure.

You can get additonal Vacuum tanks which you mount on your rack, capacity is not huge 5-10 litres
