    my 2007 1050 tiger

well, my tiger engine has been stripped for the second time in less than a year and a half. the piston cracked and had all the pistons, liners, and rings replaced at 12,000 miles. now at 48,000 miles due to excessive oil consumption the engine has been stripped again. it turns out the bore is scored and the pistons have scuff marks so yet again new pistons, rings and liners are being fitted.

whats really frustrating is that Triumph uk will not give me a 2 yr warranty on these parts from the date of fitting, they will only honour the balance of the warranty of 8 months. bearing in mind that these parts have failed twice. triumph obviously know that they have a problem and dont have the confidence that these parts will last either (pistons are upgraded part numbers). they have said if i have the same problem out of warranty they will look at it "sympathetically" what ever that means - i.e. nothing!

    seriously pissed off

    Sean.
I can understand your pissedoffness, do yourself a huge favour mate... take loads of photos of all the buggered stuff and of the rebuild. Should the same thing happen again, the pics, an engineers report and the threat of trading standards and watchdog may turn the wheel of fortune your way. Just maybe.... you have had a faulty batch of stuff watch out for other reports of the same prob.

    Good luck BIGROG

Sorry to hear that mate, as I said back when it failed first time round I was quite worried about this, to the point of speaking to my local dealer regarding the new 1050. I was seriously thinking about updating to the 1050 from the 955.
Keep us informed mate, be good to see what happens next.

I'm sure some will come along and try to pass this off as user error, well, my Tiger gets pounded to the rev limiter every time it's out, as have all my bikes. Regular servicing will ensure longevity of the beast, lowflier will vouch for this as an owner of one of my previous bikes. I ride hard, as a lot of others do and expect my bikes to last, all my Hondas have and my Tiger seems to be lasting fine.

Sean, just to clarify this, I know you put a lot of miles on your bikes but what others have you had and have you had similar issues with any of them?

    I've had Honda's, Kawa's, Suzuki's, Yamaha's and even a Royal Enfield! Here's my rating of around 100 bikes over the 30 odd years of riding;

1; Honda, build quality and reliability, 2nd to none!
2;Triumph, my 955 has excellent build quality and has been faultless.
3; Yamaha, I worked for them and can vouch for their reliability.
3=; Suzuki, build quality not as good as Yamaha but reliable and a gearbox to die for!
4; Kawasaki, build quality dubious and reliability questionable.
5; Royal Enfield, well, what can I say? A whole different ball game!

Opinions are like a*rseholes everyone has one, this just happens to be mine, don't flame me for voicing my opinion, simply agree to disagree and let's hear yours on a fresh post!

I simply want to know Sean's opinion so I can make an informed decision on a new Triumph later this year, so far, Honda's winning with the tri-colour Varadero (no ABS!).

seans really smarting about this and i cant blame him...fact is he is not the only one to have problems with the 1050 so it would seem that triumph has issue's but are burying their heads in the sand

the 955 engine has proved itself to be a good reliable workhorse that allows a sprinkling of fun

alas the 1050 engine isnt fairing so well. and this is a real shame becuase if you look at seans bike you just wouldnt believe its done nigh on 50.000miles the fit and finish is superb...shame about the engine

i know that sean loves this bike but is rapidly losing confidence in it

    keep us posted sean

Sean can't you go to trading standards now, that's crappy.

My Suzuki jeep had warrenty problems that reoccured and that Suzuki knew about and did a similar thing, I sold the jeep because I couldn't trust that I wouldn't end up paying a fortune when the warrenty run out.

    Re: my 2007 1050 tiger

Didnt they have the same problem a few years ago with the Bonneville - but with their spokes? I seem to remember something about that - they kept breaking and puncturing the tyres at speed - yet despite doezens of incidents all exactly the same, triumph refused to even acknowledge there was a problem.

That alone out me right off the brand name to be honest.

sean mate - you're a top bloke and I really hope you get it sorted to your satisfaction.

    Re: my 2007 1050 tiger

working silly hours at the minute, so getting on the forum is a lottery at the min! also had to stay off as the urge to kill something was overwelming.

ok, had a long think about this, the engine going pop the first time was due to a piston cracking and in fairness i have only heard of one other 1050 engine (speed triple) having had this problem. this was sorted under warranty by triumph.

during and after the longest day (seems like ages ago!!) i noticed the oil consumption increasing, to the point of having to be topped up every(!) day. on strip down the liner was scored and the pistons scuffed - now Triumph have admitted they had a batch of liners not honed correctly and they seem to think I have been really unlucky having had the piston break and then possibly having a dodgy set of liners fitted.the bike was repaired under warranty and fitted with upgraded pistons - one of the benefits being better oil clearance and therefore less oil consumption.

Destination Triumph have been absolute stars as usual, lending me their new fuel injected scrambler! (bastards really as they know I want one!) and then swapping it for the demo tiger once it was free.

triumphs response wasnt really overly helpful but they have asked me to put my request and comments in writing so that i can get a response in writing so i,ll have to see what they say. but saying they would be sympathetic doesnt fill me with confidence.

i have taken legal advice from several sources and will hgave to wait and see if i have any further problems really - Thanks to Cabby!!!

I have my tiger back and I'm re-running it in AGAIN! .........its brilliant and as sad as it is, I really missed it!

africa jim - would i reccomend the 1050 tiger? yes and no.... the bike is absolutely superb, the finish and fit is MUCH better than Honda, the dealer have been so helpful its unbelievable, but............... the engine problems.... what can i say other than i really hope that i have been unlucky and it isnt a sign of things to come. oh and i got 179,000 miles out of my 97 africa twin without any engine problems.

the only impressive thing was triumph had to ring the dealer to question the mileage - i currently have the highest mileage 1050tiger that they know of, so i've told them they can buy it back once it passes the 200k mark for the price of a new tiger.

This is really crappy stuff Sean.

    Keep badgering 'em!

Had a 'D' reg Landy once - complete heap of crap from the day it rolled off the production line & I mean a REAL DOG, but fair play to 'em, 7 engines, 2 axles/diffs, numerous window winder mechanisms,/power steering pumps/boxes, door locks etc later they were ALL covered under warranty, no questions, till the day we got rid 3 1/2 years later!!!
