Please help me identify a strange noise

It's a tick, tick noise, like a nail in the rear tyre. At an even speed.

I've checked the tyre and there's nothing in it. And it goes away if I pull the clutch in, or close the throttle.

Could it be a loose/worn chain?

It could be a tight spot in the chain, or a stretched bit, a new chain and sprockets possibly required?

Have you tightened the chain lately? Could be too tight, remember to measure adjustment with someone sitting on the bike!

Re: Please help me identify a strange noise

The problem has either been cured or has just gone away.

I took the rear wheel out to adjust the chain. I tightened it by one notch and then tried to fit the wheel back in again. No way would it go in.

I loosened the adjuster by half a notch and managed to get the wheel in. It's not easy when you're trying to do it by yourself, is it? I managed it by sitting on the ground and lifting the wheel with my feet.

Still too tight.

So I put the adjusters back to where they'd started off.

I removed the front sprocket cover to check for wear and/or a loose shaft, but it seemed okay. I cleaned the muck out of it anyway.

Then I went round the chain, link by link checking for stiffness. There wasn't any at all. The chain is as smooth as new. I don't know how long it's been on there, but I've had the bike just over 9,000 miles and it's the chain it came with. The rear sprocket indentations still look smooth and even (on an MTB you replace them when they're no longer symmetrical).

Having put everything together and given it a good squirt of chain oil, the problem has vanished.

Chad, I'm away to France by car next week and won't be riding the bike very much before the National. Would you be able to have a look at it there and tell me what bits I need to buy for its next service (which I'm hoping to do without the "help" of a main dealer).

If you decide you do want a dealer to look at it, I believe LV knows a good one.......(NOT)

Re: Please help me identify a strange noise

Hi Jacques,

Having just serviced my Tiger at "Chez Chad", below is a list of the stuff I ordered from Triumph-online.

K&N Airfilter
K&N Oilfilter (easier to remove, since it has a nut welded onto the bottom)
Engine Oil
Headlamp Solenoids (so you can run both at the same time)
New lightbulbs (90% more light)
NGK Sparkplugs
Fuel Coupling "O" Rings (I didn't order these, but would advise)

You might also consider ordering the metal fuel couplings while your at it (ask Chad ).

I've got a Haynes manual you can borrow if need be. Just give me a shout.

JB
