    High mileage on tigers ?

How does the tiger fair with higher mileages ?

I'm looking around for one now , I don't have a lot to spend but have seen a couple of 900's (carb models 1999 & 2000) for reasonable money , but the mileage has been in excess of 50,000.

Anything to watch for at higher mileage and any general tips welcome

It was while looking for a tiger I realised there are loads of high milers out there, I'd see a few (especially the older 885 ones) with 80,000 plus,
At the end of the day it all comes down to how well they have been maintained, I certainly bought my 12000 mile example 955i with the intention of adding a lot of miles to her.......3000 miles so far trouble free

I have no experience of Tigers but had a 900 Trophy,885cc carbed job, same as the early Tigers.Pretty much bomb proof engine.
The starter clutch can go,listen for a horrible noise on startup.Several modifications have come out of the factory over the years. One theory is that you need the battery in top condition to ensure the starter spins fast enough to start the motor rather than kicking back and eventually destroying the starter clutch.
The other thing that can go is the bolt through the shaft that drives the alternator. This can break/drop out leading to the 'dreaded alternator rattle'
Bear in mind all the early Triumphs are a tall top heavy bike so try before you buy

I have a 955i Tiger, so no help there then! But..........my previous 2 bikes were 885 carbed models, a Trident and a Sprint Executive both sold with over 50000 trouble free miles on them.

Re: High mileage on tigers ?

    Thanks guys ,

i've rang the seller of one of the tigers , the other i was looking at is sold. I asked about engine noises on startup ie starter clutch and also if any rattles on running (alternator ?) , he just said it is what it is , an 8 year old tiger with 50 thousand on it. I can view it tommorrow if i like. it only has "some" service history with an alleged £500 spent just recently including new discs. To be honest , it's not going to be doing any big miles in my hands , but i'd hate to end up with a massive parts bill as soon as i ride away. I do my own work on all the bikes i've ever owned, so i'm not too worried about big labour bills from a dealer. I've only got a limited budget and this would be under it.

Any opinions guys ? it's on EBay

thought's anyone ?? should i hold out for a lower mileage one ?

    cheers guys

Re: High mileage on tigers ?

One thing that I would ask him about is in the title he says the bike is a 955 Tiger yet in the details he says it is an 885.If I remember rightly it should be an 885 but with fuel injection like the later bikes. He also says the bike is a five speed when they have six gears.O.K. I am nit picking but a seller realy should describe something properly.

and for the money (buy it now price) you could get a reasonabley low milage early 955 (a much better engine) I personally would shop around, I only paid 3500 quid for a 12000 mile 03 plate with full service and full luggage 6 months ago
