Tiger fuel guage fault

A couple of days ago I was out on my Tiger when I noticed the fuel guage needle rapidly drop from three-quarters into the red zone (rapidly as in a few seconds). The low fuel light came on.

This morning I thought I'd see if there was a loose wire or something but when I fired her up, the guage was working again. After running the engine for a few minutes the same thing happened.

Any ideas? Would a loose wire cause such a thing?

Re: Tiger fuel guage fault

Sounds to me like your fuel tank sender unit is starting to go. Mine did the same last year and was replaced under warranty. Try removing the wiring plug from the tank and test with a voltmeter to see if there is a fault in the wiring, although if it is intermittent it may not show up unless the bike is moving.

Andy.

Re: Tiger fuel guage fault

As all folk say on here, that's what the search facility on the forum is for!

I went into great detail on this last year, the sender unit is crap, long thin pcb with diodes, mine lasted 2yrs, got more intermttent as time went on.

Good news is I got change from £50 for a new one. Easy enough job, tank doesn't need to come off, just lift the tank a bit at rear, bottom right hand side there's a bolted on panel with wires and a connector, disconnect and remove bolts, remember to do this once you've ran the petrol well down! New one bolts in, connect wires, problem solved. Mines been fine for almost two yrs now. I suppose I'll need a new one soon?
LOL!

Sounds like an earth fault. My mate hade similar problems with his 01 955i and the digital clock kept resettting and lights coming on ramdomly on the dash. When we took the dash out ans inspected most of the wiring loom was green (almost the same colour as the bike) and generally rotted out. It was a case of cut out the cables then solder and sleeve in new ones in place and after we did that the problem was solved a good electrical contact cleaner (ambsil)was used on the pcb's) as all the contacts on them were green aswell

Re: Tiger fuel guage fault

I bought a new and unused guage off eBay, fitted it and the problem has gone.

How do I test the other one to see if it was faulty? (If it was a loose connection I probably sorted it out inadvertedly when fitting the new one.)

Re: Tiger fuel guage fault

As it's an intermittant fault it would be hard to find, just chalk it up to experience and bin it mate.

Re: Tiger fuel guage fault

Bit late in replying to this thread, but my Tiger does this if I fill the tank to the brim. Doesn't do it any other time. The needle drops to zero and the light comes on, however it sorts itself out after a couple of minutes.

I know the handbook says not to overfill but when you're in the middle of nowhere I just squeeze in as much juice as I can.
