    any ideas?

I have found recently that when i start the bike up to go to work or come home again and engage first gear the bike cuts out. I then re-engage neutral and start her up agian, re-select first and its ok the second time. Any one any ideas as to why it does this? I hap been putting it down to the cold, so this morning i had her running for a bit longer before i took off but still the same thing. Even holding the throttle open to between 2000 and 3000 rpm has no difference.

Could it be a dodgy side stand switch (although this probably does not explain why it starts 2nd time every time)

As already said, sidestand switch but also clutch switch may be sticky. It's playing up first time and when you renegage neutral it's loosened up cos it's your second pull on the clutch lever.
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

Sounds possible. I'll put into gear and then out again before starting it next time and see if that helps any.
