I don't see any problem with the engine being stripped as long as it is assembelled correctly, there would probably be more care and attention spent on it than when it was assembled on the production line.
The corrosion is not bad, but its not now thats the problem, I'm more concerned about in say 3 years time when I'm looking at selling

    Re: Triumph Warranty Woes

Various folks have said they wouldn't buy a Triumph after reading this. Really? What you gonna buy then?

If you spend a while reading bike forums you'll find similar cases described for Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, Aprilia, BMW, etc etc etc...

I can't think of any brand where I haven't heard of someone somewhere who hasn't had this sort of experience. Maybe Derbi? Should I buy a Derbi then? Of course I bloody shouldn't, I just don't know anyone who rides one so of course I haven't heard anything bad There may be reliable source of information about reliability, warranty claims etc. out there somewhere that would allow you to make a rational judgement; but one-off stories on bike forums are not it...

digitalcaptive deserve our sympathy of having a crappy experience with his bike, but one case doesn't prove anything about anyone else likely experience with a particular brand.

    Re: Triumph Warranty Woes

Sorry to hear about your woes, the early 90's Triumphs were built to a higher standard than the later bike, I had a 93 Trophy 1200 with over 60k on the clock and it was still mint and on the original exhausts. My other bike sharing the garage with my Transalp is a GSX1400 and the finish on that is appalling especially the frame.

I had a mate told by his Harley dealer that they wouldn't uphold any more warranty claims on his one year old 5000 mile FXSTD after he had taken it back 3 times for chrome flaking off, they said he must be abusing the bike. If by abusing the bike they mean washing and drying it every time it was taken out and keeping it in a purpose built dry shed then yes he was guilty.

As for buying "British" Triumph now have three factories in Thailand.

    Re: Triumph Warranty Woes

Sorry to here of your problems with your Tiger.I purchased a brand new Thunderbird Sport some years ago and within 1000 miles the sprag clutch had gone, believe it or not it went a further 3 times, then the radiator developed a leak, the only thing i can say is that the dealer was very good at sorting the problems.I did phone Triumph on many occasions moaning about all the trouble i was having only to be fobbed off.I told the person i would never buy another and i havent and i wont,he didnt seem to give a jot.I sold the bike with less than 4000 miles on the clock, lost a fortune as you do.I think the Tiger 800 is a great bike ,having ridden one but how long for,i think it wont be long before you will have other problems with it,i honestly wouldnt touch one with a barge pole.I know quite a few people that have had Triumphs and without exception only one would have another, again due to the terrible realiability they have had.If i was you id keep it no longer than the warranty lasts and then get shot.Good luck in the mean time.

    Re: Triumph Warranty Woes

A friend of mine has recently visited on his 11 plate tiger, he has covered 40,000 miles on it since buying it new, looking at the bike you wouldn;t guess it had covered that amount of milage, all the fixings and metalwork are corrossion free and the bike had been 100% reliable, other than my recent warranty issue (now resolved) I have never had a problem with Triumph or the bikes reliablility my biggest issue is that I tend to fall off but then thats not specific to Triumph!

That however you look at it is how it should be, but Triumph have been poor on finish for years which has always been unacepptable. My Varadero is a 99 model and still looks like that so what you need to ask is why has it taken Triumph so long to get on the ball

    Re: Triumph Warranty Woes

My mates Varedero has a terrible finish, especially on the wheels. I've had four Triumphs and never had any problems with any of them I was also active in a lot of Triumph forums and never heard of major problems outside of the T300 sprag clutch issues and the DAR problem.

Mate is running a 800 Tiger at the moment without any gripes.

That maybe so but Triumph haven't been alone in not achieving this, the finish on Kawasakis fixings has been criticised for years, I've heard many reports of poor finish on earlier Suzukis and not to mention build quality being in question on spanish built Hondas more recently. I owned a 2003 955 Tiger in 2008 when I sold her in 2009 she had 22000 miles on her and not a sign of corrossion anywhere. I would pit the build and finish of modern day triumphs against any of the other manufactures and feel positive that they would fare well
