    Engine Bars

Got these SW Motech engine bars from Caveman back in October. Finally got round to fitting them. Fitting was easy and you don't know they are there when riding.

Nice. Can't make up my mind. Do I want the extra weight and poor aerodynamics? Do I want the protection? Can I afford them? Do they make the bike look rugged and kinda cool?

There's some chat about Givi and SW Motechs in the thread "Got 'em fitted!!!" Apparently the SW Motechs interfere with the AT's brake lines on full lock. Do they on the Vara'?

I have an AT with the SW Motech bars.
Although I have braided lines, they don't interfere at all when turning.
They do touch but they don't catch or anything.

extra weight? well a bit extra but not that much surely?
poor aerodynamics? can't really see engine bars making much difference.
Do I want the protection? yes if you like your legs
Do they make the bike look rugged and kinda cool? hmm a bit, but not as much as on an AT

Why would you NOT want the protection. Yes you can afford them £119 delivered from Caveman.( A very nice man to deal with. ) I can't feel any extra weight or difference in the handling. They don't interfere with anything anywhere. Rugged NO Cool YES.

Oh, they'd make a big difference to aerodynamics and I'm already struggling to get much more than 45 mpg.

The weight thing is important too. The Vara' is very portly already, I believe it weighs something like 55kg more than the BMW R1200GS. I want mine lighter, not heavier!

And can you guarantee that if I fit them I'd definitely not get injured legs under any circumstances? See, it's not such a black-and-white choice.

I'm tempted but not yet convinced. Nice looking though!

They could induce some turbulence into the slip stream over the side panels but this would be minimal and nothing compared with the air being forced over the radiator and around your legs or you body if you're at all wider than the screen

No, nothing other than driving a 40 te truck will completely protect your legs from injury, that's why we call safety devices risk reduction not risk elimination, do a search or two on the TA and AT sections and you will find lots of riders who have benifited from crash bars

I don't imagine they would give any protection to your legs. I got them to protect the bikes engine and hopefully the fairing panels in the event of a low speed spill.
Caveman is a member of the forum and has a company selling parts for adventure bikes. Do a member search and I think his website is listed in his profile.
