I'm with Bennetts & they stung me for £104 to transfer from a Deauville to a Varadero - only had 3 months insurance to run!

I've since got a quote from e-bike insurance for £170 per annum (nil points 3 years no claims, Kent area, 6,000 miles per annum)

The £117 is for the 6-points. The bike is free as its worthless!

Taz, why don't you get some online quotes for a full year. Most insurance companies offer online quotes via their websites and there's no obligation.

In the past I have even found it cheaper to just drop an existing policy and take out a new one with another company. You have to to be careful with losing NCD if you do that, but if your policy has only been going for a few months then it might be worth it.

    Just a thought.

Ignore insurance groups. They seem to get quoted by lazy idiot bike journalists but don't really mean very much. They have no official status of any sort.

They probably mean "Norwich Union Insurance Group", which may mean something if you get a quote from NU, and do so before they revise their groups (which in theory they may do on a monthly basis). Whether other companies use those groups as a basis or not I don't know, but there's certainly no reason why they should.

Changing bikes or moving house, etc., always gets seems to get you scr*wed on insurance.

This isn't as strange as it sounds. We all know quotes vary hugely when you phone around - you may get a 900 quid quote fromp company A and a 150 quid quote from company B. Obviously A doesn't quite everyone 6 times higher than B, or they'd have no business. It's just that their assessment of risk based on your postcode area, your vehicle etc. is much worse than their competitor's assessment of the risk. For the next punter who comes along, it could be the other way around!

Now, you obviously take quote B for 150 quid in that situation.

If you move house/change bike, perhaps company A will now quote you 150, and B will quote you 900. Nothing has really changed, the cost of insurance is the same as it was before, you just go with a different company.

Unfortunately though, if you're in the middle of a policy term, your premium just jumped by 750 quid p.a., so you get a bill for 375 quid for the remaining 6 months

If it's "only" a 100 quid increase it may be worth taking the hit. It could be cheaper to cancel it and start a new policy though - depends a bit on whether hanging on to the old one gets you an extra year's No Claims bonus.

Don't assume that insurance will go up at renewal time though. It may even be less. I moved house and my policy got cancelled on me because my new address was in such a high risk area! I took out a new policy, and the premium was less than I'd been paying before (and I had no garage at the time), though that company had been really expensive at my old address (with a garage).

As for Flabadero insurance costs - Third Party premium is based on their assessment of how much damage you're likely to do to other people in a crash, and they're probably worried a bike that lardy could take out an entire bus load...

    USE EBIKE INSURANCE

I insured my Africa Twin for £71 a year TPFT i then bought the SP1 it was an additional £38 i then sold the SP1 and bought the Varadero they sent me a cheque back for £11. Briiliant company, brilliant product

NO hassle you update it all yourself online, takes a few minutes.

it was through MCE, had 6 or 7 years no claims built up(good old gs1000 on classic insurance did that job for me)

Mine was an X1 with a few mods that i told them about and they weren't bothered
