    Re: Touring Screens

First sorry if I'm bumped this from too long ago...

Got a Mk1 Vara four weeks ago and have only gotten to go on one non-commuting spin on it, 550miles of a spin of a saturday. =D

Adore the bike. Have stopped wheelieing it and now am just pissing about finding it supremely capable and much less dangerous than than the Fazer... apart from having to use my whole hand on the front brake lever to stop the fecker sharpish. Used to be able to lock up the front on the Fazer with two fingers. Gonna wait till I'm in a gravelly carpark somewhere before f***ing with the Vara.

Anyway. I'm deaf. Freaking screen & lid do not like each other. I've purchased a bag of ear plugs and taped up some helmet vents but need a better soloution. No screen is good for ears but I like screens on long trips. Took a bandit to Barcelona in two days, great, spend a little while on a faired Fazer and now need fairings.

Looked around a lot this morning and the MRA screen looked to be the best option, and having seen the photos above, its not as pig ugly as I thought, its only mildly offensive looking. =P So I'll have one of those.

    But I've just seen this...

I wonder how many holes... how big... where... what drill bit..?

Anyway. Aren't Varadero's great. It's good to be intimidating the cars rather than being intimidated for the first time in four years. =D

    Re: Touring Screens

A lot of people I respect are of the opinion that slotted screens are the way to go though I confess I've never taken the plunge myself.

If it were me, I'd make a template for the screen, fix it to the screen in situ, pencil the slot shapes I want using a pencil and remove the template. I'd then fold it in half and redraw the slots so they are symmetrical. Remove the screen and put the template under the screen so you can trace it onto the plastic using an acetate pen (like they use to write on OHP transparencies). Now to cut the hole.

    >I wonder how many holes... how big... where... what drill bit..?

Unless you have drill bit that cuts ovals, you'll need to drill one hole at either end of the slot, then use a jig saw (with special acrylic blade) or a Dremmel to cut the slot.

As I said above, I've never done this myself, but it's the approach I'd take having cut acrylic many times in the past.

    Re: Touring Screens

I dunno if they're like that as standard, but the Powerbronze screen that was on my Vara when I bought it (and before I dropped it and broke it) had holes in.

I was always happy with the screen.

    Re: Touring Screens

I was just going to do a cluster of circular* holes...
...and pray that they don't whistle like my climbing helmet.

Thanks for the advice re: setting out.

If that doesn't do the business the plan is to get one of those sanding bits for the drill and join all the holes together.

If that doesn't work, I'm goin to chop the top of the screen off so the dirty air goes into my chest instead of straight into the visor plate.

    Re: Touring Screens

Funny you should say that! Both Z-Weiser and I have cut-down screens.

He started out asking about taller screens. Shep reviewed a few and said the Powerbronze was best for him. In the end Z-Weiser cut his down to fairing height...

    As I had done...

I don't claim a short screen is perfect, but it's "less worse" than the standard one!

    Re: Touring Screens

real men ride with cut down screens!

i just find that the cut down moves the irritating noise away from my lid - if i'm honest i'll be cutting mine down further to lower it more - but thats another story!

try the holes thing first! then if you no likey - chop chop chop!!
