    Respraying the bike has started...

But not at the local panel beater....but in my shed

I decided to give it a try myself. I bought the kit for under £150 and I've already started

Have a look at the little web page I have created showing the progress:

    http://www.pibernik.co.uk-a.googlepages.com/

I have discovered, though, that I need a new left hand side panel (front one) Please, if anyone has one in good nick, please drop me a line asap...ta!

Keep us informed how it goes, I have a whole set of AT bodywork waiting for me to turn into a masterpiece. Spose I ought to clean them first!
3 Africa Twins/280,000 miles. If it's happened to one of mine, it's gonna happen to one of yours.....eventually.

1 Varadero/17,000 miles ridden (of 40,000 miles on the bike), it's all still new to me!

    looking good dude!

Shouldn't be a problem for a man of your Calibra! Presume the wing mirror hints at the finished colour of the Vara? Good choice sir, good choice!

Good luck with the spray job. Remember to take you time and get the preperation spot on before spraying, it pays dividends in the end.

Thumbs up Re: Respraying the bike has started...

Don't paint it all black. Paint it Red White and Blue, it will be faster. Looking good so far but I suppose the tricky bit is putting the paint back on. Good luck and keep us posted on the progress.

Nice page, looking forward to following your progress. I would think a slightly bigger compressor would be better for a perfect spray, but your result shows excellence ! .... what paint are you using, and what mix ? For the cracked light housing, try to get hold of some model plane CA glue, I used it on my sidepanel and it is good (get that type that do not melt isopor). To make it cure faster you can get a heptan booster spray and it cures instantly. Then again a new housing might be cheaper ..

Re: Respraying the bike has started...

I suspect the real test will be how it looks 12 months after the respray.
Spraying plastic - even with the special undercoats - is very difficult without a temperature controlled environment.

The undercoat, primer, base colour and lacquer have to have cured to just the right point before continuing to get good adhesion and a lasting, crack free result.

I was told this by my local specialist paint retailer. I continued to spray various plastic bits of my Varadero and was very pleased with the result

12 months later, the cracks started to appear

I do hope you have better luck
