The manuel says 8k miles but I would change it every 6k. 4k is a bit too early from my point of view. Alternatively, you can inspect the oil at 4k and replace it if needed.
Do you have an owner's manual?
yes have manual, wasnt very clear, phoned up dealership it's every 4,000 .
thanks anyway..
manual says 4000mi or 6months, whichever is sooner, but i think honda may have had a rethink because i went in [to portsmouth motorcycles] to book the 4000 mile/6month service last week, but as i had done only 1800miles they said wait until 4000. couldve been easy money for them so i think thats pretty good service.
i know ducati have also started doing this, servicing on mileage not age, i think its a good policy as some guys i know only do 2000 miles in a whole year!
Had mine in for it's 1st (600m) one today (at last!).
Dealer told me that next service is due at 4000 miles.
Suggest you check your service book before comitting to a dealer. The 4K service is pretty much an inspect and adjust service and you could easily be paying top dollar for the work experience lad to poke about at your bike. Nothing is scheduled for a change, and frankly shouldn't really need it if the 8K service is done properly. Even at 8K it is just the oil and filter change that is added to the check/adjust schedule. A major service is really at 16k.
Air filter is replaced at 12K; valves checked/adjust at 16K along with plugs and fluids changed. As I beleive I keep a reasonable eye on the overall state state of my bike, chain, pads, tyre, cable operation, fluid levels, general running, etc etc I am going to ignore the 4K service, change the oil every 8K, put a K&N in so I can forget about the air filter until about 50K.
At 16K I will change oil, plugs, check valves and change all fluids (ABS brakes......hmmm).
This has got to be one of the lightest touch service schedules I have ever known.![]()
2001 Transalp XLV650. Faithful old friend still chugging away nearly 100,00miles
2007 Varadero XLV1000. Now you're torquing but sadly gone to another forum member. One of the best bikes - period.
Yamaha XT660r - slowly getting it ready for some big adventures
austin thanks for the service tips, i'm putting the bike in for the 4,000 service tomorrow, i will ask thenm first what they will be doing and make sure they get it right, they owe me big time!! driving home from my 600 mile service i could smell petrol. filled up in the garage near home and had £23.00 worth of unleaded pouing all over roaring red hot engine and exhaust,(they hadn't fitted the petrol pipe back on correctly!!!!!) so i will be watching this lot like never before!!
regards the checking of fluids etc i'm o.k. with but anything involving spanners i let people who (hopefully !! ) know what there doing get on with it and put my trust in them it's done correctly.
i'll let you all know how i get on..
Interesting topic. I've had my Varadero for less than a fortnight and whilst visiting various dealers, and considering a number of different bikes, I was quite amazed to hear salesmen justifying 4000 mile service intervals. A Yamaha salesman told me that Yamaha didn't consider oil technology to be sufficiently advanced enough to go past this mileage
Having just done 50k miles on an R1150GS with 6k service intervals I was left somewhat bemused![]()
he's talking total bo**ox
how does he explain 20,000 mile service intervals on cars
the old rule of thumb for service intervals was always 4000 mls or 6 months and many dealers still work on that basis
i tell my customers that if they do less than 5000 a year, just have the bike serviced annually
