    Insurance

    Guys

My motorcycle insurance is due up in 2 weeks time and I'd just like to share my renewal experience in case it is of use to anyone out there.

Last year I had 3 bikes on a Royal & Sun Alliance policy via Carole Nash at a premium of £344 fully comp. I thought this was OK for a GL1800, a CBR1000F and my AT. Three months ago I PX'd my CBR and AT for the Vara. and this added £54 to the premium even though I was insuring fewer bikes.

To my horror my renewal from CN went up by 25% to £429. It appears that RSA are no longer in the bike insurance business so the best that CN could offer was Norwich Union. If anyone else out there has a policy with RSA you may need to do some shopping round at next renewal.

I went straight on the internet and e-bike looked good at £260 and I know one or two of you out there are insured with them which put my mind at rest but I thought I'd spend a bit more time looking around.

I eventually went to www.thebikeinsurer.co.uk who came up with about 6 very promising, but restricted to single bike, options. I phoned one of the lowest brokers (AQuote) who took all the bike details and gave me a fully comp quote of £241 for both bikes including protected NCD (better than CN) and included a years RAC european breakdown cover!

I was well chuffed but who was the policy with? You guessed it, Norwich Union!!

and for anyone out there who are with carole nash now, and want to renew with them, or go over to them, do it online.
they wont tell you about it for obvious reasons but there is a £30 discount for online sales

    Re: Insurance

I renewed with Bennets last week and decided to see what difference it made if I didn't offer my usual voluntary excess of £350, on top of the standard £250 - difference to the quote : 80 pence.

I'd always been told that offering a higher voluntary excess reduced premiums, that would appear to be bo**ocks. Knocked it straight to zero.

So I now pay 80p more a year, and in the event of an off, I'm £350 up to start with.

Guys the whole insurance thing is a rip off I am with Bennetts & this yr they wanted £138 so I used confused.com to get quote guess what for exactly the same cover one of the quotes from Bennetts £98 CIA £84. It's plain to me that you are forced to shop around, why I know not, you would think by now that your insurance company would just give you the best deal & keep your loyalty. Having had no claims in 30 yrs car & bike you would think would count for summit, they just aint interested in owt but your lolly. The punks steal from you! then the insurers steal from you again.Welcome to rip off Britain.

I have used Aquote for several years for my bike cover and am with NU at present. Each year they send me the renewal and each year i ask for a better price and they do. Last Feb it came down to £89 from £110 for the sake of a call.

However Aquote were way off when I was looking for TP cover for my daughter ion a scooter. £255 but I found cover for her at £151 with NIG through MopedGirl.

Disappointingly, Aquote in spite of saying they are bike specialists will not do holiday cover if on a bike.... ! http://www.travel-insurance.net/motorcycle/ looks an OK deal for my lad and me for a week away next month and at 65 quid for a years cover, better value than the non-bike cover I have with my household policy.

    Thumbs down Re: Insurance

I was 9 months into a policy with CN on my CBR when I sold it and bought the Vara. To my annoyance because I was effectively cancelling one policy and starting another I lost 9 months no claims bonus.

I wrote to complain but the best they could offer is a £30 'good will gesture'.

    Lesson learnt...

    Re: Insurance

Carole Nash was bought lock, stock and barrel by the French insurance outfit GroupAMA in December 2006. GroupAMA is one of France's largest insurance groups, so this is why they don't insure with Royal and Sun Alliance anymore.

As for insurance quotes going up, last time round with GroupAMA, through Carole Nash, my insurance nearly halved!!! Mind you, bike insurance in Ireland is cruel to say the least.

It's not a case of whether we can fix it or not - it's more a case of how fixed would you like it?
