If took the whole thing to bits and found the earth connection had corroded, so replaced connector and moved the earth to one of the forks, bound in electrical tape(to waterproof)..and hey presto all works fine now!

Hey I bought some heated grips for my CBF 600 a few months ago which the dealer fitted for me. I used them through the winter and they didn't have any effect. I based this on the fact that I was going short distances but thinking about it the distance was about 12 miles. However I went from Manchester to Leeds last weekend and they were totally cold so it seems I've had the exact problem as you!!!
Euroned...can I ask, My VA8 heated grips have started the flashing scenario too...where did you find the bad earth...do you have the quartet harness fitted..?
I have just purchased a new Hornet and laid out £100 to have Honda heated grips fitted from new. I can confirm that thes grips are a load of crap and I might as well have flushed the £100 down the crapper. Checking on the Honda accessory list I notice that some bikes are fitted with 360 degree grips and some with 180 degree grips presumably because tha alternator output is insufficient to run a full element. The left hand grip gives a liitle heat but only because the heated side coincides with where my fingers rest. On the other hand (throttle) the heating element is out of reach of my fingers and therefore gives zero benefit. Honda are probably breaching the trade descriptions act by marketing these as heated grips so be warned if you are considering heated grips and either ensure you get the 360 degree ones or buy a pattern pair. A more personal irritation is the large size of the grips when fitted. If BMW can design excellent grips without a noticeable increase in diameter why the hell can't Honda?
I have the Oxford hot grips 55 degrees fitted to my AT. They are better than the standard ones and look identical to the Honda branded ones. These are warm enough but they do cut out when the revs drop too low for too long i.e at traffic lights or in town or offroad
As far as power output there was a recent posting on here and technical specs on alternator output and power usage by the bike (I think Kjell posted this - master of technical finds and photo's) and it was quite alarming that if you run headlights, an indicator and brakelights at the same time almost all of the output has been used up
Blame those little men in their white lab coats
PS noticed it's your first post so welcome to the forim if you've not had one
Regards
Paul
