Funny thing. As a few of you may know I own a VTR1000SP2 plus my old TA. It also suffered from a leaking exhaust gasket (on OE exhausts and everything) at about 20.000 miles. I did it myself, a ten minutes job (do not hate me please). Then six months later I swapped the whole exhaust.
As far as Honda knows it's one of the very few instance of this happening on SPs. Far more worrying are the regulary failing CDI units on quite a few bikes. Mine's over 25.000 miles at the moment and I've never had any problems there (fingers crossed) but there have been a few persons going through 2 or 3 CDI units in 10.000 miles or less. Since the bikes are now well outside warranty and the spare part's impossibily priced (somewhere around 250 quids) there are reasons to be worried. I am trying to get Honda interested (they surely have the means to find out what's going on, especially since many CDI units have been preserved by infuriated owners) but ever since the Japanese turned their Euro bike division over to the Italians they are only interested in selling horrifically overpriced accessories. Individual dealers and importers may be willing to lend a helping hand but without Honda Europe bringing in the technical department there's little they can do.
The problem is in my opinion that neither a leaking gasket nor a CDI unit can cause a fatal accident. In the first case it's only a "nuisance" and in the second you'll "just" get stranded. When they discovered cracks in the 929 fork bottoms they issued an immediate recall even if the bike was well outside warranty: that was very dangerous and potentially lethal.
