It must depend on the quality of the chain, if it has adjustment left on it and the sprockets are in a good condition, then I would think a long time.
If it is neglected and abused then no time at all.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

You'll know when its needing changed. It will go for months without adjustment then all of a sudden you will find you are adjusting it every few days or so. As long as it's in good nick now and you keep it well lubed it will last many thousand more miles

Mines done 30,000 and has plenty of life left in it yet. Maintenance is more important than it's age

Like all others have said, maintenance is paramount, look out for tight spots, if ignored it will snap and do untold damage to your bike (and maybe even your leg), if no serious tight spot keep lubing and riding.
